Question

How do you direct the domain name to domain/index.html ?

Asked by: Stangman66

I have server 2003 with IIS6 configured for web hosting with DynDNS.com. I registered my domain and would like it to open www.mydomain.com/index.html when you type in www.mydomain.com into the browser. I went to the properties of the Web Site and ensured "Enable default content page" was checked, and index.html is at the top of the list.

When I try and connect to www.mydomain.com i get this error message:

Directory Listing Denied
This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed.

However, when I type in www.mydomain.com/index.html the page loads correctly.

What needs to be done to have it load the index page when you type in the domain name into the browser?

What you have setup should work.

If it's not working contact them and ask why.

The default document you explain is exactly how you configure this.

Try this:

    * Open IIS manager
    * Select the web site
    * Right click and choose Properties
    * Go to the Documents tab
    * Click Add
    * Enter index.html into the dialog box and click OK
    * Click OK to close the Site Properties dialog
    * Close IIS manager

1. cmd > iisreset

2. Hope the site has the IP defined in IIS and not in all Unassined mode..

3. Check permissions for the site and set all default permissions...

4. Check the site prperty and remove and add the index.html in documenst tab once again if the issreset fails.

issue the command nslookup www.mydomain.com and verify that it is resolving to the IP address you need it to.  If it is resolving to the wrong address, then you have no clue where you are going.

Still not working...

I have the site IP defined in IIS. I have restarted IIS, removed and added index.html to the default content page and restarted IIS again.

Ran command for nslookup and it returned the same IP i have defined in IIS. I have checked permissions but not sure what I need exactly for this. Is the main permission for the internet guest account?

Any other suggestions?

If you RENAME index.html to default.htm, does it still show up properly?  Check the security permissions specifically for that file, not just the directory.

If that does not work, use filemon.exe and procmon.exe to shed some light on what is happening.  You can grab them at:

http://live.sysinternals.com

by: Stangman66Posted on 2009-03-18 at 09:17:01ID: 23920365

Downloaded the filemon & procmon but I'm not sure how to fully use the programs to debug this situation...

Okay, here's where i'm at currently.

I have my localhost setup for my intranet with the TCP port of 80. I can access my PHP files that I wanted only accessible through the intranet at the address 192.168.1.104/Myfiles.  My home directory files are stored and set to the Inetpub/wwwroot folder. In the properties of this site in IIS it lists the ip 192.168.1.104.

I deleted the previous website mentioned above, and recreated a test website in IIS call mydomain.com with the host header of mydomain.com with the my ISP assigned IP address for TCP port 81. The root folder is set to: "C:\websites\mydomain" and permissions are set for IIS_WPG and Internet Guest Account for read and execute.

What I've noticed is that I cannot access any of the files using www.mydomain.com/index.html on the web, or www.mydomain.com. When I type in mydomain.com it displays "Directory Listing Denied This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed". On DynDNS i have mydomain.com with an A record pointing to my IP address from the ISP.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. From what I understand, when you browse to mydomain.com it checks the A record and sends the user to my server. My server has the website created with that IP assigned, and should load the index.html file as described in the default content page properties. But none of this is working.

When I run nslookup mydomain.com it returns:

Server: vip01ftwotx.ftwo.tx.charter.com
Address: 68.113.206.10

non-authoritative answer:
Address: my IP (matches IP shown in Router)

What's the next step?

by: giltjrPosted on 2009-03-18 at 09:45:57ID: 23920729

--> with the host header of mydomain.com

I have not used IIS and host headers, but would a host header of mydomain.com match www.mydomain.com?  What happens if you go to http://mydomain.com?

by: Stangman66Posted on 2009-03-18 at 09:51:38ID: 23920790

I get the same error message

Directory Listing Denied
This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed.

I took out the host header for now. When I type in the IP address it displays the same error message.

What are the default permissions for "C:\websites\mydomain"?

To just review the site settings:

Do you have permit anonymous access for the resource?
Do you have Enable Default document enabled?
Do you have the file name you are using as your default document in the directory?

by: Stangman66Posted on 2009-03-18 at 10:38:57ID: 23921324

Under the properties of this website:

I have enable anonymous access
I have enable default content page
->I have the file name listed on this page, index.html and it's at the top

How do i check default permissions for "C:\websites\mydomain"? I open properties for that folder and it lists under the "Security" tab: Aministrators, Creator, IIS_WPG, Internet Guest Account, System, Users.
Each one has: Read & Execute, List folder contents, and Read checked.

by: giltjrPosted on 2009-03-18 at 10:48:29ID: 23921435

O.K. it sounds like everything is setup.

What you can do with filemon is is monitor access to all files and see if IIS is actually trying to look for c:\websites\mydomain\index.html.

Now, if you have tried filemon you will see that Windows accesses a LOT of files in short time period.

So what I would suggest is that from a second computer you start up your browser, put in the URL, then start filemon on the server, to back to the second computer and press enter, once you get the error, go back and stop filemon.  Then you can scan through the entries to see what files IIS is actually trying to access.

ok let me try that.

by: Stangman66Posted on 2009-03-18 at 11:21:25ID: 23921865

here's what it returns...

and it appears it's trying to go to the inetpub/wwwroot folder for th efiles

by: Stangman66Posted on 2009-03-18 at 11:23:31ID: 23921890

oops heres the file

by: giltjrPosted on 2009-03-18 at 11:30:43ID: 23921967

O.K. that indicates to me that someplace your IIS settings are not what you think they are.  So you need to go back and verify what your IIS settings are.

by: Stangman66Posted on 2009-03-18 at 13:54:09ID: 23923616

Okay, I tested by moving all the files to C:\inetpub\wwwroot folder and mydomain.com brings up the site. I have no clue where the setting would be for that other then the "Home Directory" tab under local path for the website - which shows C:\websites\mydomain, but the webpage will display when i put local files in the wwwroot folder. Where's the setting for this that I am missing?

I wanted to get this to work from it's own folder that way i can host my friends webpage down the line when i get another IP addy.

For the filemon log the application w3wp.exe is opening the C:\inetpub\wwwroot\ folder when it should be trying to open C:\websites\mydomain. How do I change this if it's not from the "Home Directory" tab under the website properties in IIS 6.0 ?

by: giltjrPosted on 2009-03-18 at 19:22:20ID: 23925810

I went back and re-read, you removed the host header.  Can you add it back as www.mydomain.com and test?

by: Stangman66Posted on 2009-03-18 at 20:35:26ID: 23926119

Why is it trying to read from inetpub/wwwroot when I specified the "Home Directory" as "C:\Websites \mydomain" ?  I doubt the header has anything to do with that, but I can add it and test it out.

It seems if you tell it the home directory is located somewhere and it's still set to the default there must be somewhere else you have to edit it. I ran into a post that was talking about the metabase.xml list and it has this listed:

Could this be the culprit?

Yes, the path should point to your folder. C:\Website\Mydomain.

by: Stangman66Posted on 2009-03-19 at 06:53:44ID: 23929451

Thankyou, before I accept as a solution, can you tell me which application changes that path? I'm sure I can just edit the Metabase file, but what writes the change in the Metabase so I know for when I add another IP?
