I am unable to return to the root directory since there I had my site corrupted (from some outside source).
I then installed Joomla in a new directory and set up a sub domain.
Only option I can think of is to get another hosting account from hostmonster and move the installing to the root folder there. That would be a lot of trouble.
I have seen some examples/suggestions as to how to mark up the .htaccess file but have never found those answers to be clear enough for me to use.

Hello rgcole,
At a first glance, I would look at the subdomain stuff: obviously, your joomla files are in L09 sub-directory BECAUSE the site is in a sub-domain. And you probably got a sub-access that only grant you write privilege at L09 level.
If your client ask to show at the root level, then it means that current content at root level will not be shown anymore, and thus, your client should give you the possibility to store the joomla files to the html root.
I'm afraid you will not be able to achieve the expect behavior unless you can create (or modify) a .htaccess file in the html root folder, or touch the DNS settings (which is very, very tricky).
Rgds,
Werner.
