Question

Moving to a 64bit system

Asked by: Sabastion

I'm really having a hard time with a recent server upgrade. For the longest time the company I worked for was using a 32 bit windows 2003 server. Recently the server has died on us so we had to get a new server. Unfortunately the only servers that they hosting company has now come with windows 2008 64bit.

I have been fighting with it for a little over a week trying to get our old websites to work.
Our websites are classic asp using ADODB.Connection. I have spent days trying to make it work correctly. I have gotten the server to give me useful errors but cant seem to get any of the solutions to work for me.

Can anyone give me a hand?  Here is a run down of what I have done so far.

- Accessed IIS and enabled detailed errors and posting of errors to the browser.
- Set up test website
- Created the test database
- Created a database login
- Created a user for the test database using the new login
- Set up a 32bit worker process and assigned it to the website
- Loaded test page

That's about as far as I get before I start getting errors. I do apologies for my lack of knowledge. I usually don't deal with this portion of a server. Unfortunately for me I'm now the only one that can do it. Any help would be appreciated. At this point I'm even considering paying to have it done if I cant find a company that can do it.

Thanks again for any help you can provide.

Also here is the page i am trying to use to test the server and the error that I'm getting.

See if you change the ADODB to a different one oledb or sqlnclt10:

I am not sure using classic ASP you need to define a 32bit worker process.  Those would likely be needed if you have a ASP.NET application where you may have to define the 32bit .NET framework versus using the 64bit one.  c:\windows\microsoft.net\
You would need to register the 32bit.

Removed the worker process and it seems to be going a little farther but still not connecting.
Tried everything in those articles. Here are the different connection strings that i have tried and the error that they give me.

This is progress right?

Is the new server you are working on is also hosting the new SQL server install or is the SQL server residing on a separate system?
Double check that the SQL server is configured for remote connections.

Did you try using the sql native client or setup a system DSN on the system then use the DSN in your connection string?

by: SabastionPosted on 2009-10-08 at 12:47:10ID: 25529340

The server and the sql server are on the same machine. As far as I can tell the server looks to be set up for remote connections. Maby I'm wrong, never deal with a server on this level before.

Is there a way to check if you server is configured for remote connections?

I dont know what sql native client is or how to set up a system DSN. Ill try looking that up and see if I can find out.

Thanks for your help so far.

Would switching back to SQL 2005 help this issue in any way? The old server was SQL 2005.

by: arnoldPosted on 2009-10-08 at 13:38:11ID: 25529813

It is not an issue with the version, but whether the sql server surface manager was configured for remote access. start\programs\microsoft sql 2008\configuration tools.
Make sure that the system is configured for shared memory/named pipes/tcp/ip.  Then look at the client configuration to make sure those are also configured.
You would need to restart only the MS SQL service for the changes to take effect.
See if these changes get you further along.

It looks fine but I just still cant connect. I can only connect to the database from on the server.
Is there some way to make sure the correct port is opening?

by: SabastionPosted on 2009-10-08 at 16:12:07ID: 25531180

Also on Sql Server Configuration Manager under sql services SQL Sever agent is not running. Could that be the problem? Also it will not start no matter what I try.

Heck ya, so I reverted back to 2005, I'm just more familiar with it. Went back through the things you suggested and they worked. I have no ideal why it worked for 2005 and wouldn't work for 2008. Oh well.

Once again thank you thank you.
