Question

Connecting to Remote PC via perfmon

Asked by: ttist25

I'm attempting to connect to a Windows XP Pro SP2 workstation from my Windows 2000 DC using Performance Monitor.  I'm receiving an error of unable to connect to machine.

I have successfully connected to other XP Pro SP2 workstations through perfmon on the same network.  I have also confirmed network connectivity to the problem machine.

I'm assuming this is a firewall issue (only native XP firewall is installed).

What conditions have to exist (exceptions, etc) in order to remotely monitor this computer with perfmon.exe?

TIA

I do not know but testing on an XP machine should give you results pretty quickly.

Just compare a working and non-working machine, or see what options you have in the firewall regarding Perfmon.
Also check the Perfmon help file.

I hope this helps !

check services.msc  There is a service that needs to be running for this to work, but I can't for the life of me remember/or find which one it is.  Are you a Domain Admin?  try running it as a local admin of the pc, not domain admin, too.

from the DC, right-click the my computer icon and select manage.
right-click at the top (machine (local) and select the machine that you are tring to access.
open the system tools tab and you should see performance etc.
Does this run OK?

I'm a domain admin and I'm running from the DC (via Terminal Services xion).  I tried "Run As" as the local user of the remote machine, temporarily added the user to admin group, all to no avail.

Keith, I tried what you suggested with similar results - couldn't connect.

I'm thinking it's a firewall issue, but I need to know what to add in the exceptions list since I'll be monitoring from the DC (so I don't interrupt the user).

Any ideas?

Thanks again for the responses and happy new year to you!

Sounds daft but can you run it when sitting at the PC itself? is the service even active on this box?

Using the Manage option, did it fail completely to connect or just running the Performance options?
the Manage uses RC as its connection protocol, can you perform a net use \\machine name\admin$ or similar to it? Can you browse any shares such as the printer folder?

The exception would be for perfmon.exe  but you will need to add this at the client PC so the user will get disturbed either way...  and a Happy New Year to you too :)

Thanks everyone.  The service that needs to be running is Remote Registry (thanks puter_geek), which I found by testing on a working/non-working XP machine (thanks SysExpert), which works after re-adding Domain\Administrator to local Admin group (not sure what the deal is there!!!) (thanks Keith)

I'm trying to start a performance log from a server to a XP workstation.
It all works when the XP firewall is disabled. With Netstat -o I see that the ports used to establish a connections between win2k3 and XP is defferent every time in a range of 2709 to 2768.  So adding one port to the firewall doesn't do the trick. So I have to run perfmon with the XP firewall disabled. Remote Registry service is started. Does anybody know a trick to get a remote perfmon.exe added through the XP personal firewall?

Run the Command from the command line. Not sure exactly how to disable this fix but it fixes all remote MMC issues with the windows sp2 firewall. "netsh firewall set portopening tcp 445 smb enable" I am not an extreme expert and I don't know exactly how to disable this command. More at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840634

This works, thanks :-)

I figured out exactly what it does and how to disable it. Does this make me more extreme? Only time will tell. The above command adds the port 445 to file and printer sharing exceptions on the XP Firewall list. I believe it also enables remote desktop extensions and capaabilities that have been disabled on XP since Sp2. To turn it off you can uncheck the port 445 on the exceptions list. I wonder if somone just adding the exception manually and manually enabling file and printer sharing and allowing remote desktop connections would have similiar results.
