Connecting to Remote PC via perfmon

Tags: perfmon, remote, connect
I'm attempting to connect to a Windows XP Pro SP2 workstation from my Windows 2000 DC using Performance Monitor.  I'm receiving an error of unable to connect to machine.

I have successfully connected to other XP Pro SP2 workstations through perfmon on the same network.  I have also confirmed network connectivity to the problem machine.

I'm assuming this is a firewall issue (only native XP firewall is installed).

What conditions have to exist (exceptions, etc) in order to remotely monitor this computer with perfmon.exe?

TIA

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

I'm trying to start a performance log from a server to a XP workstation.
It all works when the XP firewall is disabled. With Netstat -o I see that the ports used to establish a connections between win2k3 and XP is defferent every time in a range of 2709 to 2768.  So adding one port to the firewall doesn't do the trick. So I have to run perfmon with the XP firewall disabled. Remote Registry service is started. Does anybody know a trick to get a remote perfmon.exe added through the XP personal firewall?

Run the Command from the command line. Not sure exactly how to disable this fix but it fixes all remote MMC issues with the windows sp2 firewall. "netsh firewall set portopening tcp 445 smb enable" I am not an extreme expert and I don't know exactly how to disable this command. More at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840634
