The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Do you see the BIOS screen? It's the splash screen that usually tells you something about the system or it's manufacturer, or the BIOS itself. Immediately after the BIOS screen the operating system starts loading.

If you don't see the BIOS screen, or if the shut down happens DURING the splash screen, then the problem is hardware. The BIOS scans and queries the hardware on the computer to see what is there and if it's functional. If the computer powers down before the OS even begins loading, the only thing it can be is hardware.

Do you have a diagnostic CD that may have come with the computer? Or a diagnostic partition? Are there any messages when it boots properly telling you to press a particular button to enter diagnostics?

ok another thing that happens my monitor when i plug it in it says check signal cable ,then i proceed to plug it in to my computer the one that is booting off after five seconds and the screen just stays black
i probbably will have to bring it in but was just wondering if any one of yous could help me diagnose it

Unfortunately, it definitely sounds like a hardware issue and diagnostics will have to be run on it. What brand is it? Or was it built?

I would remove the board out of the case, plug in basic components (a hard drive, memory, video, etc.) then boot it up see if it will POST?

12.07.2007 at 07:36PM PST, ID: 20432877
When you boot it up do you hear any beep sounds, if so what is the pattern?

you are saying remove my mother board out of my case and just plug in my hard drive video card and memory  then see if it will boot up ? i think that s a little out of my league id be in oww of all the plugs going where and too

it was built by a well known computer builder i no and it has worked great for 2 years and all of a sudden my monitor wasnt being detected then now it turns on and shuts off with in 3 to 5 seconds

I'm afraid it sounds like a failed hardware component. Unfortunately it could be anything, the hard drive, the mother board, the CPU or the RAM (probably (although possible) not the power supply since it happens so quickly).

Can you contact the builder to see what he/she recommends for diagnostics?

Best,
sl

ya a freind of mine says possibly it could be the cpu ,i have a fan on the mother boarrd that cools the cpu and he said when he pushes it in he said the comp would stay on but it still wouldnt detect the monitor so i brought it in to see what it is and i`ll but the part and install but need ed to no for sure what the prob was so i didnt buy things i didnt need thanks for your advice ill write back to let you no what i needed and ask how to install if i have problems, agains what kind of video card do you recomed for computers quility vs pricing

It could be the gooyee stuff (you can pick up a tube at Best Buy or an any computer store) that connects the the CPU with the heat sink, especially if pressing on the fan/heat sink makes a difference.  The gooyee stuff (technically, thermal greece) just makes a solid connection between it and the sink.

Regarding video, it depends on what you plan to do. For gaming or video manipulation you need something high end (at least 256MB of dedicated Video RAM). Otherwise, anything on the market that you can afford will be fine.

Thanks and good luck!
