Question

Random bluescreen, keeps rebooting afeterwards

Asked by: Stussyexpert

Hi,

I run Vista SP2 64, every couple of days i get a bluescreen, always when another application is open. I have run the windows debugging tools on the memory dumps, these are the last three results:

Probably caused by : usbehci.sys ( usbehci!EHCI_sMode_ResetSlot+69 )

Could not read faulting driver name
Probably caused by : ntkrnlmp.exe ( nt! ?? ::FNODOBFM::`string'+2c42d )

Could not read faulting driver name
Probably caused by : Ntfs.sys ( Ntfs!NtfsNonCachedIo+280 )

I have already tested the memory, no problems found.

What type of cumputer?Do you have latest bios and usb drivers?

If this is a trace leading into the correct direction (i.e. all dumps are similar to those), you have problems with an external USB storage device, e.g. Thumb drive or USB Harddisk. NTFS.sys is responsible for the NT File System (hence the name). usbehci is the Enhanced USB Driver, which is known to be flaky when used with e.g. iTunes. Please search for "usbehci BSOD Vista YourApplication" (replace YourApplication with the "culprit") in your favourite search engine to see whether there are known issues.

There is no external storage device connected. This computer is installed 3 months ago, all drivers are up to date. When the bluescreen occurs, the pc keeps rebooting until i disrupt the power.

i suggest to run a repair install : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html
if it still happens, you may have hardware problems.

another thought - what is connected to the usb ports? and do they have their own power supply?
overloading the usb can also cause this !

That sounds more like a hardware failure - a device or controller not initialising correctly. It could be that drivers omit some initialisation steps, and the hardware is not reset to power-off setup - hence a combination of driver and hardware issue. Sometimes you have to go back to an older revision of driver. But its all guessing, trial-and-error.
