Unknown Device
Under device manager sometimes you have under other devices, devices unknown.  What is the best way to figure out what these devices are?

These unknown devices .. is the HW with a faulty device driver...

you would need to look at the driver file and match it with a device..
... or..
you could just uninstall the unknown device... if the HW is still connected .. it should pop-up as .. New Hardware Found.. which would show you what

PCI Vendor and Device Lists
http://www.pcidatabase.com/index.php

You can look under the Device Details Tab, in the Device properties, and use the "Device Instance ID" to try and identify the MFGR....

Looks like this....
"PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_1677&SUBSYS_01791028&REV_01\4&1D7EFF9E&0&00E0
"
Use the Vendoir and the Device Search to see if you can get some details....

PCI\VEN_14E4&
DEV_1677&
SUBSYS_01791028&
REV_01\4&1D7EFF9E&0&00E0

uninstalled the unknowns, refreshed, and they just popped back into the unknown category.  It didn't pop up a box asking to install anything.

To identify hardware, try using Everest:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

or Belarc:

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

To identify drivers,try this:

To identify drivers for your pc do the following:

Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Information. Click on "components" and highlight "problem devices". Any hardware device with a driver problem will be listed here. Make a note of the first line of the entry. It will contain a Vendor number and a Device number (VEN. . . . DEV. . . .)
both four digits long.
Look up those numbers here:

http://www.pcidatabase.com/index.php

This will tell you the manufacturer and the chip number.  First port of call is the manufacturer's website.  If no joy there, try a driver database like Driverguide:

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
