downgraded vista to windows xp and now sony vaio laptop sound does not work

My coworker downgraded a sony vaio laptop from windows Vista business to Windows xp pro.  He downgraded the laptop because the laptop was running slow with Vista.  Now that windows xp is installed the laptop is running faster but the audio does not work.  The realtek audio drivers we have for the laptop does not work.  Is it possible sony hard coded the laptop to only work with the original vista drivers?  Any help with this matter will be greatly appreciated.
