The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

"Setup did not find any hard disks installed in your computer"

Tags: Sony, Vaio, VGN-FZ240E, Windows Vista
Please help.  I have been trying to downgrade to Windows XP from Windows Vista on my new Sony Vaio VGN-FZ240E.  The problem I am having is when I boot from disc the Windows Cd will load and then I have the options to Repair, Install, or exit.  Once I select Install it gives me the error message "Setup did not find any hard disks installed in your computer."  I have been searching for the Sata drivers and thought I downloaded the correct ones but it still can not locate the hard drive once I select F6 for third party driver at startup.  I have also tried NLite to put these drivers onto a Windows XP cd.  No luck there either.  I am guessing I have the incorrect drivers.  Can someone please direct me in the right direction here.  I have been going in circles all day long.

thank you

Hello samuriami,

What SATA controller are we talking about - the name of it?

Try and go to the BIOS, and then disable "USB Legacy", it sometimes interfere with such controllers.

Best Regards,

There are no XP drivers listed for your model on the Sony Web site. http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNFZ240E&LOC=3

It is quite common for new models not to be supported with drivers for XP.

You might have to learn to love Vista

These drivers are for windows xp, but can't be used on floppy, so you have to integrate them:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-62909.html

This should work to put on a floppy drive:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=2800&DwnldID=14848&strOSs=44&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Professional&lang=eng

Hope this works for you.

Check the BIOS settings for the SATA controller. You may be able to change the SATA controller from native mode(ACHI) to ide in the BIOS. This will allow the install to see the hard drive.

Here are the XP drivers for the VGN-FZ2 series.

To load the SATA drivers, did id you press the F6 key when prompted at the bottom of the screen, during install?
If you did, the external floppy drive probably isn't being detected, especially if its USB.
You may have to slipstream the storage drivers onto an XP install cd in order to place the SATA drivers.
Go through the BIOS again and make sure there isn't a setting for that controller, another term used is "legacy"

Previous to my question I have pressed F6, it found drivers that I had on the floppy accepted them and then the message came up that it could not find the hard drive.  The drivers you have gave me the link to I am downloading now but they are too much to fit onto the floppy.  So the only way sounds like if I slip these into the XP CD.  If this is the only option I will try this again as well.

Thank You

Those drivers are for all the components once XP is installed.
You need the drivers for this component in the list you provided earlier.
-->IDE Controller      Intel(R) ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2850<--
The utility to make the floppy for use at the F6 prompt can be downloaded from here.
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProductID=2101&DwnldID=10611&strOSs=44&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Professional&lang=eng
You use this program to create the floppy.

Okay, I created that disk.  I restart, press f6 come to the screen that asks to press S, select the driver - Intel(R) 82801GHM SATA RAID Controller (Mobile ICH7MR/DH).  There are four total drivers I can choose from but the other ones have Server and Desktop in the name.  It will only allow me to pick one.  After this it takes me back to the setup screen with the chosen driver to be loaded.  I select Enter to continue, it loads additional files from the XP disk and then it brings up a new screen.  Now I have the option to Repair, Install, or exit.  I choose repair or install and it takes me to the screen "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer."

Do I have to add anything else to this disk from what the link /downloadcenter.intel.com downloaded to the disk?  It seems though this computer just doesnt work with XP......

Just used this new one you provided and it did not work either.  The driver on this one I selected is
Intel (R) 82801HEM SATA RAID Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E).  Is there a different one to try?  What do you think is the problem here?  I really need this fixed.  Thanks.

We're closer, the controller is the ICH8M Ultra, is that one there in the list?

02.20.2008 at 06:21PM PST, ID: 20944398
no, there is ICH8M-E/M also, then two drivers for Desktop/Server/Workstation that dont work either

02.20.2008 at 06:26PM PST, ID: 20944431
It worked!  I just tried the last driver Intel (R) 82801HEM SATA RAID Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E again and it worked, I must have chosen the other driver on that list which is E/M.  Thanks for all the help.  Its reformatting now!!!!

thanks you again!
