Question

Missing driver

Asked by: busterbrit

Everytime I start the computer I'm asked to install a driver on an unknown device.  I tried having Vista look online and could not find anything.  I have no idea why this is happening.

How do I find out what device this is for?  What should I do?

Attached is a screen shot.

tried chipset drivers and did not work.  Look at this attached screen shot.  It says something about my VMWare.  I'm running VM server so I can us XP when needed for Act 6.0.  could that be the problem?  Does VM Server us a driver?

by: busterbritPosted on 2008-03-22 at 23:29:19ID: 21188898

should I just try installing some drivers from Dell's website that are made for my computer.  There is a second chipset driver listed that I did not load becuase I did not know what it was for.  What happens if I load a driver that my computer does not need?  Would it hurt my computer?

by: cbmmPosted on 2008-03-22 at 23:54:58ID: 21188923

no it wont hurt it, your chipset is probaly intel. if its the wrong chipset the installer will give you an error and wont install

tuanthedude:  I installed the program but am completely lost with what I'm supposed to do from there.  I don't see how this is going to help find the driver needed.  Please help.  Thanks.

GLComputing: I installed Belarc and it did not help me find the missing driver as well.

cbmm: installed both drivers and it did not fix the missing driver.

Will Dell support know what to do?  It seems like they don't know anything...

by: cbmmPosted on 2008-03-26 at 09:09:41ID: 21213163

does this laptop have control buttons on the front of it. you need to start looking at some of dell utilites, they have a driver to control some of these functions. there is also a touchstrip reader driver. go through all the drivers that are available, one of the the will get rid of this

by: tuanthedudePosted on 2008-03-26 at 11:29:49ID: 21214736

thats very strange ive never seen an unknown driver that doesn't have even additional information about it. yea like everyone else is pretty much saying; just install all drivers from dell's support site and see if it triggers anything.

also! there should be a folder that all the drivers extract to. update the unknown driver and search through those directories within that folder and see if any recognize it.

you should also know that there is an urgent BIOS update for your system as of yesterday.

Dell XPS M1530 System BIOS A08
Urgent
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R182442&SystemID=XPS_M1530&servicetag=&os=BIOSA&osl=en&deviceid=14338&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=3&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=248848

i would be very surprised if this BIOS update fixed the unknown driver issue, but you never know.

by: tuanthedudePosted on 2008-03-26 at 11:38:38ID: 21214824

have you tried the "Dell PC Checkup troubleshooting and diagnostic tool" in the Dell support center software.

there is also an update for Dell support center as well
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R180808&SystemID=XPS_M1530&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=13213&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=3&catid=-1&impid=2&formatcnt=1&libid=25&fileid=247543

by: busterbritPosted on 2008-03-27 at 09:21:53ID: 21223123

tuanthedude:  I did not install the Dell PC checkup and diagnostic tool becuase I thought it was just another application not needed.  Should I install it?  Is it a good program?

I will update the Bios.

I have downloaded all the drivers I needed for my machine and tried updating to them and that did not work.

The laptop does not have control buttons on the front.
