Question

Need to force a driver into device manager

Asked by: IronsideSecurity

We have a stituation where we need to force a modem driver into device manager so it can be used by Zetafax. We already know that it works from the previous server installation but now the new server is virtualized and we're using an IP to serial converter. The driver files consist of only an INF file and a CAT file. I've alread tried to manually install through the various windows wizards. the modem works with the IP adapter but we need the driver to make it work correctly in Zetafax.

Hi there,

So the modem is installed and it is showing up in device manager.
Right-click on it and update the driver. Selecting the path to the inf file.
Lets see what that does.

  1. In Control Panel, run Phone and Modem Options.
  2. Go to the Modems tab.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Check the "Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list" box.  Click Next.
  5. Click Have Disk.
  6. Browse to the location of the .inf file.

Yea, I've done that, shift-3. The box where the drivers should be listed is empty. The modem is not detected by Windows nor is it listed in device manager. I need to get it into device manager so Zetafax will use it. Zetafax tech support told me that their new version will only load drivers that are listed in device manager unlike the older version that allowed separate loading of drivers.

Didn't mean to sound arrogant in my last comment. Just frustrated that a project can't be completed becuse a driver that used to work doesn't anymore...

Have you tried adding one of the generic drivers under the (Standard Modem Types) heading, e.g. Standard 33600 bps Modem?

by: IronsideSecurityPosted on 2009-09-22 at 08:40:11ID: 25394100

ESXi 4.0 wont allow passthrough of the serial ports. That's why we have to use the IP to serial converter.

The Generic US Robotics driver included with Zetafax almost works. It just won't recieve Faxs correctly. On the original installation, we tried many different generic modem drivers and three different physical modems (one internal and two external) We found that the one that I'm trying to install makes the modem function perfectly in Zetafax. We just lost the functionality of installing drivers directly into Zetafax in the latest Rev.

Have you tried right-clicking on the .INF file and selecting Install from the drop-down list? What happened?

by: IronsideSecurityPosted on 2009-09-28 at 09:23:38ID: 25440669

yes, I tried installing the inf file. I saw no change in behavior or additional available drivers after installing the inf.

by: IronsideSecurityPosted on 2009-10-12 at 10:58:04ID: 25553434

I was able to add a generic modem driver through control panel phone & /modem options/modems. from there I simply updated the driver to what ever I wanted.
