http://support.dell.com - insert your Asset Tag and this should take you to the correct drivers page for your machine.  Download the relevant drivers and install.

Have you gone here -> http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=gen  and entered your service tag??

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-11-05 at 15:46:57ID: 25755386

There is a small possibility (I have not checked) that there might not be XP drivers for your machine!

by: djgrimeyPosted on 2009-11-05 at 15:48:55ID: 25755399

There is not Windows XP drivers on the Dell website for my laptop.

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-11-05 at 15:49:43ID: 25755405

Then I would recommend putting it back to Vista.

Look in Device Manager, your Display adapter (probably VGA or something, double-click it to view the properties, go to the Details tab en look for the Device Instance Id.

This will tell you the vendor and device codes. Enter them in Google, e.g. "VEN_10DE&DEV_0240" and see if some sites come up in the result that have a meaningful content.

It is possible that you find an INF-file with this content. If there is anSignature entry in the INF file with the value "$Windows NT$" or "$CHICAGO$", you could use that driver for your Laptop.

Else, report here with the vendor and device codes.

Dell does not support Windows XP on that hardware, therefore the drivers are not available.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=RC978219&l=en&s=slg&os=WNET&osl=en&catid=&impid=&SystemID=STUDIOXPS13

Time to go to W7 anyway!

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-11-05 at 15:51:16ID: 25755422

It may be the least favourite OS that Microsoft have produced (according to the take up), but there really is nothing wrong with it and it takes you close to how Windows 7 works, so is good to familiarise yourself with.

Just turn off User Account Control and you will be fine (and much less annoyed at all the security warnings).

by: CoSmismgrPosted on 2009-11-05 at 15:52:17ID: 25755427

Or, as Netcraft is suggesting, see if the manufacturers of individual components supply XP drivers... check the vendor codes and go to http://www.pcidatabase.com/index.php to find your manufacturer. Then go to their site and see if you can track them down.

Well im going to break it down for you, why I can't use Vista or Windows 7. I use Serato and this laptop is for my disc-jockey gigs. Those Os won't work good with it and Xp is recommended by Serato. I need the driver that will aleast work with XP now.

If no-one has made drivers for the hardware, then you can't have them.

Not trying to rub salt into your wounds, if you knew you wanted XP before you bought it - I would have checked first that they existed before buying the laptop.  Sorry.

by: NetcraftPosted on 2009-11-05 at 15:55:15ID: 25755451

If Device Manager will not tell you the Vendor and Device codes, the registry will. Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000

and look at the MatchingDeviceId.

Or even more specific:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceClasses\{5b45201d-f2f2-4f3b-85bb-30ff1f953599}

where you will find a subkey for your display adapter.

wjaeger, im doing this now.

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-11-05 at 15:56:05ID: 25755459

What product from Serato - they have a few!

by: djgrimeyPosted on 2009-11-05 at 15:56:32ID: 25755464

I had XP on this laptop before and i foudn all the drivers and it worked perfect. But, I was excited about Windows 7 and installed it and guess what it crashed on me in a live gig. Also Vista did the same, so the drivers for XP are out there.

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-11-05 at 15:59:03ID: 25755481

Did it ship with XP or Vista?

If it shipped with XP - you should have recovery CD's available.  These will have all the drivers on them (or should do)!

Sorry about the crashing - that can't have been good.

I found my own answer, took a lot of searching. But, it's good for anyone who has the same issue. Below are the drivers. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!

I got them off Dell800

http://www.dell800.com/thread-7571-1-1.html

It's in Chinese, so here's the translation for the table

System Utilities
Motherboard
Graphics Card
Card Reader
Network Card
- Wired
- Wireless
Sound Card
Bluetooth
Touchpad
Webcam
Quickset

Just click on the links in the XP column, most of them are actually hosted on the Dell FTP.

by: alanhardistyPosted on 2009-11-05 at 17:00:38ID: 25755835

Well - that would have ben tricky for me to have found that site and recommended them to you.  Not a website that I can read!

Well done on finding them - sorry we could not help this time around.

djgrimey: I was talking about this link: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4645781&postcount=1933

I posted this quite early on. Not sure why you never bothered to look at it. There are links to all of the drivers that you need.
