Hard Drive Partitions

I have a 500GB hard drive in which I wish to reformat and added partitions.

Looking at:
a) 1 for the OS Microsoft XP
b) 1 for the applications
c) 1 for saving data

Q1. What size should each partition be.
Q2. Should I use something like Partition Magic 8

Q3. Should I add more for data
