How do I remove special characters from an Excel spread sheet such as tabs, spaces, etc.

I have a range of cells that have tab characters embedded into them.  How do you remove them?  I've tried the "Find & Replace" command, but having some difficulty here.

Look at the second column.  I would like to remove the special character that's embedded in most of the descriptiuons.

do a replace (Ctrl+H)

in the *search for what* space, hold down the ALT key, enter 0009 from the
numeric keypad, let up on the ALT key, that puts a tab character in there.
