The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

I want to monitor who logs on and off our network

Tags: Microsoft, Server 2003
I'm looking for some useful tools for my network or even if there's ways for me to do the tasks myself.
Firstly and most importantly I want to be able to monitor whose login on, where there login on and how long theyve been on. Some suggestions I've seen are that this can be done using SQL. If this cant be done easily does any know if there is any software that does this?

Other things I want to be able to do are monitor files & folders that users access & use and Id also like to be able to browse folder permissions. Any help even a point in the right direction or recommendation would be very helpful.

Cheers
Simon

Yeah I was hoping to be able to store the log on, log off information in more of a central location.

So please fund me some pints by accepting this solution so that everyone else can have a look at it.
Thanks was nice working with you.

HI
Am sorry to ask to nuisance ok here you go if you are happy with scripting you need to add logon script with this one as this is the logoff script so just add logon script run it and link with the GPO and this should work

Set objSysInfo = CreateObject("ADSystemInfo")

Set objUser = GetObject("LDAP://" & objSysInfo.UserName)
Set objComputer = GetObject("LDAP://" & objSysInfo.ComputerName)

strMessage = objUser.CN & " last logged off " & objComputer.CN & " " & Now & "."

objUser.Description = strMessage
objUser.SetInfo

thanks

Simon,

Is your network on a domain?

If so logons and logoffs can be logged easily  by enabling auditing.

Computer Configuration - Windows Settings - Security Settings - Local Policies - Audit Policies.

If you are not on a domain then a script on each PC or small batch file that autruns writing some data to a central spot may work.

Vish - I'm not very good with VB scripts could you explain a little and do I need any parameters of my own?
John - yes, i'm on a domain and where does that log the info? event viewer?

05.14.2008 at 02:26AM PDT, ID: 21562326
HI
Simon i guess john is right as well if you just need to see the files as in event viewer in security then you can enable policy.
But in my case it will show you log on and off on the ad users and computers ..
So i guess have a choice if you want you can go with johns idea which is easy to implemet of make worth hassle to have a script  to show log on and off on ad users and computers.
Thanks
Vish

I think I possible need to rephrase the question as Im looking for a more central user friendly output but I'm happy to split the points as your solutions obviously record the users logging on and off.

05.14.2008 at 03:52AM PDT, ID: 21562730
HI
Thanks for that Simon but i think i havent answered your question
i can tell you that on centrally user friendly way in my opinion will be to use script the way we are using as this will allow you to see the log in and log off time next to users name in active directory.
This wont need any external application like third party software.
If you are ready to spent few extra money to do this then i would say Spiceworks is the good solution to track all network complete solution in one application.
thanks
