Question

Modify Data Display

Asked by: StoneG

We produce cards with custom magnetic encoded data on an ISO mag stripe.

Recently we had a customer who complained that the beginning and ending sentinels showed up when the card was swiped in a reader [using Notepad or Wordpad I assume].
This is normal but the customer was looking for a customized display that would show only the data and not the beginning and ending sentinels.

Apparently he was able to write some code that allowed him to limit the display to just the data.

I would like to be able to do this but I have ZERO experience in writing & implementing code.

Are there any tiny freeware/shareware applications that would allow the selective display of data from a mag stripe reader?

No help there dbrunton.
We have mag stripe readers and I didn't see anything about modifying the display to keep from showing certain alpha-numeric characters.

by: dbruntonPosted on 2008-08-19 at 15:25:42ID: 22264480

More links.  These include source code samples which you'd have to modify I imagine to not display the end characters.

I'm not sure what I would do with source code samples.

...but I guess I'll look when I have some spare time just for the fun of being totally confused.
I'm not ready for that tonight.  Maybe next week.

Did you notice my comment: "I have ZERO experience in writing & implementing code." ?

>> "I have ZERO experience in writing & implementing code."

Did I notice?  Not really.

There are binaries included with some of the links I gave.  You might be able to hire a cheap programmer to modify them to do what you want.

"Did I notice?  Not really."  :-\

Thanks for your input.
It might have been better directed if you had actually read my comments and request, though.

Hopefully someone has knowledge of "any tiny freeware/shareware applications that would allow the selective display of data from a mag stripe reader."

We need something we can give to a customer if we run across this display issue in the future.

The application from Exeba isn't what we need. It's a communication interface for use with "smart" readers and is way too expensive anyway.

I'll peruse the e-scan link when I have a few moments.

Here follows another blind recommendation (blind because I do not have the necessary hardware to test this, so, yeah, "blind" is my liability disclaimer): http://stripesnoop.sourceforge.net/

It looks like you are the only dude around that works with magstripe cards, StoneG. You are an endangered species. =)

I am inclined to insert a funny Lounge-style pun here, but... maybe after lunch... yeah.

by: StoneGPosted on 2008-08-25 at 08:24:40ID: 22306255

"...endangered species."

heh!

We'll see.
There's been a real push for the smart chip & contactless cards to totally replace mag stripes, but smart chip cards just don't have the massive infrastructure over here that you see across the pond. The readers are more expensive plus the chips are subject to ESD damage.

It's interesting to note that the contactless card  formats (Mifare, etc.) can be scanned by a total stranger who is nearby, or a merchant when you walk through the door or even pass by the establishment.
You might as well just walk down the street tossing out cards with your encoded information printed on them.

When everybody starts getting their contactless card data lifted by  anyone who is within 5-10 feet of them there will be such a cry throughout the land that surely they will let my mag stripes go!

I'll look at that stripesnoop later.
Thanx!

by: RDAdamsPosted on 2008-08-26 at 14:28:43ID: 22319756

Ok so you already have the programming ability since you create the cards now.  What software are you using to do the programming now?

by: StoneGPosted on 2008-08-27 at 09:01:03ID: 22326325

We use multiple machines/applications to encode.
Encoding is not the issue.

This is at the customer end of the process.

The issue is to be able to read the encoded data [either by a USB mag stripe reader and something like Notepad or Wordpad or some other basic display]  and prevent the alpha-numeric characters that indicate the beginning & ending of the data tracks from showing in the display.

These characters are integral to the encoding process and cannot be removed from the process.
We don't intend to try.
We just don't want them to display in a given situation.

We have no use for a high end application. We just need a quick & dirty application that can allow for modifying the display.
Something free or near-free that we could give to a customer to use if this need arises again.

This may not even exist outside of somebody's home-grown code. I don't know.
It's beginning to look like there's nothing out there that would be of use to us.

There was no reason to delete.
It wouldn't have made any diff. as I currently have unlimited...  and your responses were the only ones that indicated you had actually read what I was asking for & tried to address it.

In hindsight, I shoulda given you an "A" considering the level of responses from the "Experts".

It seems that I tend to ask questions that are far & above the abilities of the run-of-the-mill EE experts.
I usually wind up having to have them deleted due to lack of relevant response.

Please don't spend these points foolishly.

You can save them for.....
