Any thoughts on how to fix the machine or at least recover the data on the hard drive?

yeah...nothing happens when I hit F2
I think it is F2 as stated above...keep hitting it and see what happens
Do you not get any errorafter the beeps or are you stuck oin the Dell logo?
If the latter, some machines you can hit Tab key to get out of the startup logo (in your case Dell) and check what is going on in the background (ie: errors)

no luck...still stuck on the dell screen ...htiing the f2 multiple times...hitting tab...no luck
If you have 6 consecutive beeps, this indicates that it failed the video BIOS test. Do you have 2 video cards (the system board card and a expansion slot card)? Is the computer still under warranty? Contact Dell.

Thanks for the help...I tried your f2 technique but it didn;t let me past the dell logo...I think I'm going with Calling Dell route (if they will ever pick up the phone)...
