"Windows Installer "
"Preparing to install..."
This little window pops up whenever I launch most applications and windows everytime.
It stalls the application for about 1 minute then the application launches.
HISTORY:
I believe this is an unresolved installation error involved with AutoDesk map viewer for city zoning maps. It was installed OK 2 months ago but then early last week I visited another city's site that wanted another installation before launching. The installation did not go smooth, but worked eventually. I also installed Acronis Disk Director 10 later. I ran CCleaner each day. Last night I ran CCleaner and it had a long list I deleted. I closed spybot which caused my harddrive to work for a long time with svchost. Eventually I just closed XP Pro. The next morning the boot sequence was truncated.
Repaired windows & got it to boot. Then the Windows Installer message with delayed window launches began.
According to
support.microsoft.com/kb/5
55175 there are a dozen fixes.
Method 1 (doesn't work)
msiexec/unreg = result is windows load normally except the little windows Installer message is briefly visible. Dell support says should not run without this.
msiexec/regserver = the little windows Installer message stalls the window/application for about a minute.
The various methods include :
Method 3: reinstall Windows Installer 3.1
Method 5:empty various temp files
Method 11: Check pending installations - empty some registry temp installation lines.
I am not proficient enough to do these.
Dell wants me reinstall my operating system which means I would also have to reinstall 25 business programs. (Too bad I didn't clone my drive sooner. I bought the Acronis Disk Director last week.)
