I'd like to buy a Registry Cleaner and would some recommendations of products that people have tried and found to be good.

There's one from Microsoft, Microsoft RegClean. It has one screen interface, pretty simple really. Just start up the program and it is already scanning your registry. :) It creates a .reg undo file in the current folder, so you can re-import the problems it found, if you need to.

Personally I use Registry Mechanic. Version 7 also cleans out your temporary files.

Most registry scanners, as you will often hear, can do more harm than good.
I believe this to be true, for some scanners. Some of them, such as "Registry Doctor" I recall finding the most "problems" but immediately ruined my system after scanning on "recommended" settings.
But I found a few gems out there.
Without a doubt, my favorite is jv16 PowerTools. Plus, it has a lot of tweaking tools, which I find invaluable.

But I didn't take his word for it, and I didn't just relay on his "repeatability" factor either. I simply scanned my system (which I intentionally let decay over a few weeks) with a myriad of Registry Editors (using both "Deep Scan" and recommended settings. Then, I took a look at the proposed keys for removal.
My rule was this: If there was a single key flagged for removal which would do harm if removed, the cleaner was disqualified.
To my dismay, Registry Mechanic (which I've been using for years) did not pass. I only tested commercial products, but Ccleaner, is the best of the freeware solutions I'm aware of.
