The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Corrupted Windows Registry - NTUSER.DAT

Tags: Microsoft, Windows, XP SP2
I'll try to be as brief as possible here, so I'll skip the explanations as to exactly how this problem came to be. But here's the current situation: I have a Windows XP SP2 installation and 2 user accounts setup on it. The one that I'm using is the administrator's one /with full privileges/ with a NTUSER.DAT registry file damaged! The file size is ~17MB and I would have posted it here if it wasn't for the 5MB file limitations here. I'm able to use my computer though and it took me a while to exactly pinpoint the cause of the erratic behavior of my system. Some of the problems include random windows installer popups, registry has been recovered by a log file or something error message upon logon, inability to uninstall certain programs and most importantly - blue screen crashes with page fault in non paged error message when I try to either run registry cleaners or to export registry entries or to run any sorts of registry analyzers. All of the above apply to my account only - the other one behaves normally.
Today I managed to localize something that I'm 99% sure holds the key to the resolution of the whole issue - there are some registry keys which for some reason cannot be renamed, deleted or manipulated in any way and which cause windows to halt - I suspect that's a serious bug in the Windows API. Using regedit I navigated to one such key and tried to erase it or rename it but each time I got an error message that the key cannot be deleted etc. I tried logging into the other user account and importing the hive with the same results. When doing an export of the registry I get a blue screen crash. I also have a windows xp x64 installation on the same machine and I tried the same thing from it - during the hash mount the system warned me that the file was damaged and there might be some data loss, but it loaded. When I attempted an export of the key I got another crash as well.
All that made me feel that I should use some sort of an offline registry editor to remedy the broken file. However finding one that doesn't use the windows api to manipulate the registry proved to be a challenge and I still haven't found it. Both regtool and regeditpro failed to do the job. Using windows registry file viewer however I manage to view the broken key - it has just one subkey, but this tool is just a viewer I can't edit the file. Using a hex editor also I managed to rename the broken key, but that doesn't help at all.
Finally - the question here is if anyone knows of a way to delete registry keys in NTUSER.DAT with a hex editor or if I can find a registry editor that doesn't use the windows api.
All other suggestions are welcome as well
