Question

The Citrix Metaframe you selected is not accepting connections.

Asked by: ewhitaker

Cannot access published apps on new Citrix Metaframe XP installation.  Username, password and domain all authenticate because I am able to see the published apps.  When I double click on one of them it says:

Initializing...

Connection in progress...

Then a message box that reads "The Citrix Metaframe you selected is not accepting connections."

Any ideas?

Increasing point value as this is an urgent matter.

How are you connecting to the applications, through NFuse?  Either way, you can see the applications, you don't actually authenticate to the server until you try to run those applications.  Can you connnect to the server without using the published apps?  You know, when you connect and it's like a terminal server, you log on and get the server desktop?

From the Citrix KB: http://support.citrix.com/kb/entry.jspa?externalID=CTX127867

Verify your issue is similar before messing with the registry.

It sounds like it might be a Terminal Server licensing issue.  Do you have Terminal Server properly configured with a separate license server?

by: ewhitakerPosted on 2005-05-05 at 11:34:34ID: 13938718

I am using NFuse to connect.  I cannot open published app or the servers desktop through citrix regardless of what logon I use.  I can however get into the server through terminal services.  The server is a Win2k3 box and the firewall is opened on 1494 and 3389.  I rather not open more if I don't have too.  I have another network that runs Citrix Metaframe XP through 1494 without any additional ports open and it does just fine.

I tried the registry hacks in the links above and they didn't seem to work.  The server is mission critical so anything that causes me to reboot I will need to schedule downtime.  that's why it's taken me so long to post.

All the licenses are showing as activated in the software and on the MyCitrix site.

Do you think its a firewall issue?

You have to have 2598 open if it's later than release version 3.

It is release 3.

by: BILJAXPosted on 2005-05-05 at 14:08:34ID: 13940220

then you need to forward port 2598 to the server.

by: ewhitakerPosted on 2005-05-05 at 19:09:21ID: 13941804

I opened 2598 and am getting a different error when I try to open a published application but the same error if I try to open the servers desktop through citrix.  When trying to open a published app I receive the following error:

"Cannot connect to the Citrix MetaFrame server.  There is no Citrix Metaframe server configured on the specified address"

Do you have the box "Accept Connections" checked under the management console?

don't forget to set the ALTADDR for the "public ip" address.

Forgive me.  I'm brand spanking new to setting up Citrix.

Where is the "Accept Connections" button in the management console?  Looked all over the place in there and on Google to but didn't see anything that looked like what you are talking about.

I did change the ALTADDR to the public, that had not been set yet.  Still the same error messages but I am working my way through the documents in the links you posted.

Thank you, for sticking with this.  I really do apprieciate the help.

Thank you.  I found it but it was checked already.  I've done some further testing and I cannot get in using NFuse but I can access the servers desktop using an ICA client.  However when I do that I get an error saying that there isn't any licenses.

I have 5 licenses though and they activated.

You checked your TS licesces is it up and running etc

by: BILJAXPosted on 2005-05-11 at 06:02:49ID: 13977310

Citrix requires a 1to1 Windows TS license for every Citrix CAL.

So you would also need to have 5 free Windows server Terminal Services License free to use all 5 citrix licenses.

I only have the 2 TS licenses than what came with Win2k3 but I can remotely administrate it through an RDP connection.

by: ewhitakerPosted on 2005-05-11 at 06:06:37ID: 13977351

So far I only need to use one Citrix CAL.  Will I still need additional TS licenses for just one connection?

by: BILJAXPosted on 2005-05-11 at 06:11:18ID: 13977396

It wouldn't hurt.

by: ellandrdPosted on 2005-05-11 at 06:16:02ID: 13977433

TS cal will be used in RDP as well some might have a lease time on them as well

by: BILJAXPosted on 2005-05-11 at 06:20:02ID: 13977474

every RDP session you open, takes one license.

Are you running this through a Firewall?  Did you NAT the Server Address through the Firewall?

Did you set the AltAddress:  set the altaddress by typing altaddr /set x.x.x.x at a command prompt on the server (the internal address is the inside LAN Address and the AltAddr would be the Natted External Address).

Monica

by: ewhitakerPosted on 2005-05-12 at 06:25:44ID: 13986039

Yes, the server is behind a firewall.  I did NAT the servers address through the firewall.  The altaddress has been set to the outside IP address like BilJax had mentioned.

I am wondering though, if you need TS CAL for every Citrix CAL then what is the point in using Citrix?  If all I want to do is publish apps will I still need a TS CAL for each Citrix CAL?

by: ewhitakerPosted on 2005-05-26 at 07:43:39ID: 14086426

Got it working.  The problem was licesning activation.  Being new to Citrix I actived the license for the wrong version.

PEBKAC

Anyhow, since none of the posts discuss the actual solutions I'm awarding points to the person giving the most effort.

Thanks BILJAX.
