The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

We have two citrix metafram (xp) configured in a farm. From Citrix management console Full Desktop is published for remote users. When a user clicks on Full Desktop, citrix server becomes available via RDP. There are 30 Terminal Services and 30 Citrix licenses configured in Farm.

Problem begins when user use Full Desktop, in fact after 05 (approx) citrix connections no-one else can use Full Desktop. User get error message saying "The system has reached its licensed logon limit. Please try again later."

This is a problem some of us have seen after Windows 2003 SP1 was applied:
   http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Citrix/Q_21569152.html

Here is a Citrix description of the symptoms (but they don't provide a solution, and they didn't mention that it can deny service to users):
  http://support.citrix.com/kb/entry!default.jspa?categoryID=508&externalID=CTX107340&fromSearchPage=true

If you do get close to denying users access because of the mismatch, you can restart the CitrixLicensing service on the licensing server and things will again be aligned (for awhile).

I am using Citrix Metafram XPa so I can't see CitrixLicensing service on any of my server. We have 3 servers on the network, these all are running Win2003 with SP1. Firstone is main DC, also configured as TS licensing server. Second-one is Citrix (with NFuse website) and third-one is running only Citrix without NFuse. Both CTX1 and CTX2 are running Terminal Services and use DC for TS licensing.

If I try to make TS connections with either CTX1 or CTX2 (not using citrix) then I can make as many connections as I want. However, when we use citrix nfuse or citrix neighborhood then user strat getting error message 'The system has reached its licensed logon limit. Please try again later.'

CMC shows accurate number of servers and licenses. 30 Available and 4 in use.

I've restarted citrix services on both CTX but no luck.

For some strange reason it just shows 4 in use when you check CMC, while there are about 6 connections established.

CMC licensing page shows;

Server = CTX1
Pooled in Use = 0
Assigned = 30
Assigned in Use = 4

There is a little misunderstanding here: when you publish a full desktop, you are NOT USING RDP.

I would remove the published desktop completely and publish it again.

You don't have this problem with different published applications?

09.27.2005 at 04:29AM PDT, ID: 14965568

I recheck it and now this time its doing it with every application. We have following applications published by citrix;

MS-Office 2003
Windows RDP Client
Citrix Full Desktop (it was publised using CMC, select "Desktop" in Application Locations)
SAGE

I created new 3 test IDs and published new desktop for those IDs but no luck. Still get same error message.

09.27.2005 at 06:17AM PDT, ID: 14966243
Once again I would say, when CMC licensing page shows  "License in use = 4" then no more users can connect to citrix servers.

I changed the preferred server in farm but no luck.

Are there any pertinent errors or warnings in the Application or System sections of the Event Log on any of the servers?

09.29.2005 at 01:22AM PDT, ID: 14981947
No there isn't any relevant error message in App or Sys event log. Yesterday we restarted both Citrix Server and fortunately user are able to make as many connections as they want. Previously we were unable to make more than 5 connections but yesterday it went to 15 and it was alright.

It hasn't resolved problem completely as CMC licenseing node shows only 5 license In-use while there are more then 10 connections.

We are using Per User licenses so I believe each new user ID requires a TS and Citrix license (weather it comes from Nfuse or Citrx Neighbrhd).

Rank: Master

You need both a TS and a Citrix license for each active user for both Per-User and Per-Device mode.

CMC will only show Citrix sessions - any sessions coming from your published RDP client will not appear there, but they will appear in the TS licensing management application.

Thanks ET, thats understandable but If I make 15 NFuse connections with 15 diff user IDs then it should show 15 licenses In Use, but for some strange reason it only shows 05 or sometimes 06.

I don't have experience with NFuse; I've used MetaFrame 1.8 and then moved to PS3.0 with CSG.

I would expect that 15 connections from 15 different machines with 15 different userids would use both 15 Citrix licenses and 15 TS licenses. With CSG and the web browser interface, you need to actually launch an application on the Citrix server for the license to get marked in-use (simply logging into the browser interface does not use a license).
Accepted Solution

You are right, I was making multiple connections from same workstations and therefore license count was not decreasing. But when I create 15 connections from 15 WS then its OK.

Thanks for your help.
