Question

What is the fastest remote desktop application?

Asked by: mikeycisme123

Hi all,

We run VMWare to host some virtual machines which connect to our clients via their own VPN clients. These clients use remote policies to lock out connections from the LAN to those machines when connected, so the only way to use machines is through the VMWare console.

The problem - we have a new remote office, and the employees need to access the VMWare machines running at our office through VMWare console - which can be incredibly slow when run on their local computers, or through a terminal server set up here.

The goal: Provide virtual access the the VMWare console running anywhere where it will show the machines at our office as fast as possible.

What we are testing:

I have set up VMWare Console on a new Citrix server, and am offering a faster connection through a Cisco VPN client into the system. We will not offer the citrix system directly to the internet.

Any suggestions? Anyone try any of the open source desktop virtualization projects?

Thanks!

Mike

Why dont you add a second NIC to your Virtual Machines that is on a backend network "DMZ" and have you cisco VPN client connect your remote users to this backend network,  and then use something like VNC to remote the desktops...

I suggest you take a look on Logmein.com
is a free tool that can remotelly connect to the computers faster!

But after test this technology you want it (i can imagine this) i suggest buy the tool or look the Gotomypc (is a Citrix tech) with the similar function as Logmein.

Best Regards

Thanks for all your suggestions...

As for a second NIC - the Cisco Client policy is controlled by the client company we connect to - and their policy is set to lock down the computer once connected so that no other traffic may connect to the PC, except for over the tunnel. So, adding a second NIC unfortunately won't work.

As for third party apps such as Logmein.com - I'm going to check those out. The performance is the big issue.

What about install IPX and using VNC over IPX?      Sounds lame... but drastic times call for dratic measures...

Which Cisco Client Policy?  The VPN Client or do they also use the Cisco Secure IDS client on the PC?

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies - unfortunately we can't install IPX across the entire network - the user is connecting in over VPN from Minnesota into NY and others will want access to this solution.

The Cisco VPN client is the basic Cisco Systems VPN client - the client does will not change their policy so access from a computer running VMWare console into the VMware server is the only means of connecting. They do not want us circumventing their policy, since the computer is used to connect into their network.

What we have been trying: We installed the VMWare Console app on a very powerfull Citrix server and are testing accessing the app using the citrix web client. We'll see how that works.

Other option: A dedicate, very fast PC with the VMWare client installed, and some very fast remote desktop app into that PC from the remote user's laptop in Minnesota.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Mike

All,

I found out that VMWare server has VNC built in, and it works great with UltraVNC client. It is exactly what we need. It actually connects to the VMWare server, not the guest, so you are not affected by the network status of the guest.

I love it.

All,

I've discovered the VNC feature build into VMWare - it is the fastest solution. It is easy to use as well, and I recommend using it with th latest version of UltraVNC
