The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Creating Custom Desktops for Wyse Terminal Users on Presentation Server 4.5+
Tags: Citrix, Presentation Server, 4.5 - 4.6, Wyse Terminals
Hi All,

I have a brand new Terminal Server 2003 running Citrix Presentation Server 4.5.  I already have switched th company web portal (nfuse) to this server and everything works perfectly.  What I would like to do now is move over all of my current Wyse terminal users to this server.  The problem is nothing was taught in my Citrix Class about how to create a custom desktop for each user group so that when a user on a Wyse terminal clicks connect to server and it prompts for his cudentials, the user gets the assigned desktop and icons.  I have searched for a week now on google, brian madden etc and cannot find anything that makes any sense or is up to date.  Can someone please explain to me how to do this?

We have Active Directory 2000 (not 2003).

Please let me know if there is any other information necessary for you to assist on this.

I am thinking your best way would be to first set up your users into OU's based on applications they will need.  Like OfficeOU, ApplicationA, ApplicationB, etc.  Some users will be in multiple OU's if they need multiple apps.  When you publish these apps put the correct OU users in the setup, and have it put an icon on the desktop.  Then publish a blank desktop for all citrix users, and have Program Neighborhood Agent run at startup with pass through authentication, this should put the correct apps on the desktop for the users.

Hopefully that makes sense, it will probably take a little work and testing.  If you need more information let me know.

That sounds like a very good idea that I will try to do.  For some reason no matter what I do though I cannot get the PNAgent to login to the server.  The Program Neighborhood works, and the Web client works perfectly.  Just this PNAgent keeps saying it cannot connect to the URL.  I noticed a bunch of googler's having the same problem but so far I haven't found a solution to it.  The web interface is running on the same box as the presentation server.  I can't even get it to connect locally.  I can go to the Web Interface locally, but the PNAgent fails no matter where I install it.  Any ideas so I can finish trying your solution?

Thanks!

When you have PNA running it will show as an icon down in system tray.  Right click it and put in the name of your webserver (in your case your citrix server).  It should be http:\\webservername.domain.com.  That should work, although you may have to put in the entire sitename, i.e. http://webservername.domain.com/citrix/PNAgent/config.xml

I am typing it in just like you have it there.  It still says it fails to connect to the server make sure the information is correct.  I do have my XML service running on port 8002 instead of 80 so maybe I have to somewhat alter the address to add the port number?

Thanks

OK, first make sure that your PNA site is correct.  Go to your web interface settings in the Citrix Access Management Console (open up the Citrix Resources/Configuration Tools).  Inside there should be your web interface sites, including your PNA site.  First verify you are using the correct name as it's http address will be there.  Next right click the PNAgent site and click on Manage Server farms and make sure the XML is 8002 instead of 80.

You should also make sure you server has the correct XML setting which is down Presentation Server/Farm/Server folder.  Right click your citrix server and go to Modify all Properties and check the XML settings.

I am being given the boot for the night but I will be picking up on this first thing tomorrow.  We are getting very close.  First a few things.

1.  You pointed out something important, I didn't even have a PNA site.  I didn't realise i had to create one.  Now I have one created and I set the XML service port to 8002.  It gets to a login screen but then fails to launch the application set request.  So I know we are close.  Probably some tweaking that I don't know about which maybe you can help me with.

2.  I checked and the XML port number is also 8002 on the farm setting/server.  Your idea is gonna work, i have faith in it.  Just gotta work out a few more minor things.

Thanks so much and hopefully you can continue to help!

When you make the PNA site it will ask you which farm and server(s) it will use.  In the CAMC you will have your apps published in the farm.  Each app will have it's own set of users, just be sure when you publish the apps you tell it to create a desktop icon.  Then each particular user should get their desktop populated with the icons they are allowed to use.

Let me know where you are when you start up again tomorrow.

Ok I am back at it.  Here is where things are and what options I have etc.

1.  First as a reminder, all applications that I have published work perfectly through program neighborhood and the web client.  It is just the PNAgent that is giving me problems.

2.  I created the site and can get to the point of a login but get the error "The remote server failed to execute the application Launch request".  After I click ok on this error immediately another one pops up that says, "Program Neighborhood Agent could not contact the server.  Please check your network connection".

3.  I checked all the permissions on the applications and also made sure every one of them has the create desktop shortcut box checked.

4.  I have basic encryption running on the entire farm at the moment.

5.  Here are the settings from my current PNAgent site:
a.  Under manage server farms (when i right click my PNAgent site) I have the name of my server, spelled exactly the way it is spelled (case etc).  I have the XML port set to 8002 which is exactly the same as the XML service port number set at my servers farm level setting.  Transport type is HTTP.
b.  If you click the advanced button I have enable content redirection checked as well as enable socket spooling.
c.  If i leave this window and right click the site again and choose "Manage Application Types" I have "REMOTE" checked.
d.  If you leave there, right click and choose "client side proxy" I  have it set to none.

6.  Now if you start right clicking the Config.xml located directly underneath your PNAgent site here are the settings I have:
a.  Configure authentication methods - Prompt user is selected for the time being.
b.  Under configure session options I have everything checked (it was by default and I haven't modified it at all).
c.  Under manage server settings I have - Allow user to modify server URL checked but nothing else.

That is all I can see for now and I hope is some type of help.  Again I get the login screen to prompt me but then I get the error mentioned above.

Thanks!

The main issue is PNA is still not seeing the web server.  I have not tried this where the citrix server is also the web server but I do not see why that would be a problem.

Make sure if you right click the PNA icon (while in the citrix session) and click on Options that the server is this citrix server.  You should just be able to put in the <<<servername.domain>>>> and not even have to put in the end with the PNAgent/config.xml as it should find it on it's own if everything is internal, assuming you have only one PNA site.  I would even try the ip address rather than the servername if it still isn't working.

You can also test this directly from the citrix server itself without going into a session.  See if the PNA agent is working from the console itself.  Then once it works from there we can try from a session.

Any luck?

03.18.2008 at 06:00AM PDT, ID: 21150475
I cannot believe after all this time the one stupid mistake i made.  The answer is yes, i have had luck (just now) and what you told me to do did work.  Somehow, i fat fingered the XML port number entry for the site even though i swear i checked it 100000000000000 times.   At any rate, I have my whole setup going to 8080, NOT 8002 like i said earlier.  Somehow once i said 8002 to you here my mind permanently recorded that number in memory.  So when I seen 8002 on my site i thought yup, it's right....  duh.  The second I went in and changed my XML port number to 8080 on my PNAgent site, it all worked perfectly.  I can finally move on and start publishing some desktops!

Thanks so much for you help, I was really getting so irritated at this but I swore i checked it and I know it did, however my mind seen the 8002 and thought yup, thats correct.  The scary part was a few posts ago, i specifically told you i checked it and confirmed they matched.  That is the scary part.  Perhaps I need to see someone about split personality disorder lol!

Again thanks so much, time for me to start publishing some desktops!

03.18.2008 at 06:59AM PDT, ID: 21150991
Excellent!  Glad it worked.

03.18.2008 at 08:01AM PDT, ID: 21151752
Well I did manage to connect to the PNAgent and the applications all showup when i click on the icon, however I cannot get them to appear on the desktop for some reason.  I have double checked and they are all set to put a desktop icon there.  Any ideas?

Thanks!

03.18.2008 at 08:52AM PDT, ID: 21152367
Try right clicking the PNA icon and go to options/Application display.  If that solves it, I am not sure why it didn't carry over, but then you can make a test account not in any GPO and do the same thing (set up the desktop settings in PNA), logout, log back in as admin, and copy that user account into the default user account and then it should work for everyone.

03.18.2008 at 10:47AM PDT, ID: 21153805
That did the trick!  Made a test account, ran through the scenerio and viola, desktop icons.  Thanks again so much!
