Question

Wyse S30 client and disappearing applications??

Asked by: davis

I have several users reporting that their applications are disappearing or 'minimizing' while in use.  The commonalities are this - they are using Wyse S30 terminals (running Windows CE5) and have three (3) connections configured - one RDP, one Citrix ICA, and one Terminal emulation connection.  ALL connections are 'active', when the problem occurs.  They report that while in in terminal emulation or RDP connection that the application being served for that connection will often disappear.  This occurs while they are using the application.  When the app disappears, it seems the next available 'open' application will come to the foreground.  To them, it seems as if the application simply disappears.  In reality, the connection that 'disappeared' on the terminal is still 'active' and is available for reconnect at the 'Winterm Connection Window'.  The key combination CTRL-ALT-END will allow them to view all available connections at the 'connection window' and re-connect.  What could be causing this 'drop-out' of the current, active connection for these users?  Thanks for any insight!!

Are the users logging in with unique names?  Also, do you have other thin clients that are not having this issue, or is it affecting all of your thin clients uniformly?

Yes, all users have unique names.  The issue is only occurring with Wyse users who have a connection to a singular terminal server.  Other Wyse users NOT having the issue connect to a Citrix farm.  This may be a licensing issue, possibly.  I see events related to connections and licensing.

it doesn't appear to be related to licensing as the events in the EVT viewer are isolated and do not correspond to the numerous daily occurrences of the 'disappearing' act.  I have noticed the timing of some of the events coincides with an automatic ' idle timeout' of the RDP or Citrix session.

I have discovered this issue is occurring because of an 'idle timeout' of the ICA session.   while they are working in another 'connection' on the WYSE terminal and the ICA idle timeout disconnects the ICA session, the active, foreground application disappears.  The active application is either another RDP session or a terminal emulation (telnet) session.   Unfortunately, the ICA timeout needs to be enabled in order to comply with security policy.  I need to find a way to keep an ICA idle timeout active but NOT cause the current forground application (in use) to disappear.  Any ideas are appreciated!

I have increased the idle timeout within the ICA session and that appears to have 'masked' the problem enough so that users do not experience the 'disappearing act'.  Although removing the timeout sessing completely will surely fix the issue, I need to leve enabled to that the session is not idle indefinately.  How should I close this case now?  thanks for your assistance
