Question

Citrix XenApp 11 Client Hangs Opening

Asked by: thaug

I have a Vista Business SP1 32-bit user that connects over the VPN to get to our Metaframe 3 server running Windows 2000.  This connection has been working for a few weeks now without problems, but within the last few days, the application can no longer open at all, let alone connect.

Several times now I have attempted to remove the client, remove extra directories and registry entries that were left straggling, and I still have not been able to open the XenApp 11 Client for Hosted Apps client.  After trying to open the Citrix Program Neighborhood, it just hangs there.  Checking it out in task manager shows the pn.exe process running, and I'm forced to end the task.  It does not take up excessive resources, it actually stays at 0% usage.  I verified that the computer can actually connect to the server through Remote Desktop, so it shouldn't be any network issues.

Nothing on the client log or server indicates anything going wrong.  The only change made to the client was normal patch Tuesday installs, and the server was patched at probably around the same time that the user started experiencing the problem, so that is a possible avenue to take.

Anyone have any additional ideas?  If I can't find out anything soon, I'm going to have the user overnight the laptop to me so I can rebuild it, which I'd like to avoid.

When you state that you removed the extra directories and registry settings, did you make sure to delete the ones under the user's profile? The App Cache is stored in the user's local profile and will persist though a reinstall.

With the user logged in close all instances of the Citrix client in delete %userprofile%\Application Data\ICAClient as well as run regedit and delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Citrix\ICA Client.

Then start the Citrix client again and see if it resolves the issue.

Another tips is also to delete all printers before you connect to the citrix server. Printers are mapped when logging in and if you ave a corrupt printer or driver this will also resluts in hang. In my scenario it was a Xerox printer.

I did delete the directories in the user profile, but there is always the possibility that I missed one.  I thought of the printers as well, so I changed the default to another to see if there was a difference, which there wasn't.  However, I did not delete them.  I'll have the user try that.

The user is sending the laptop to me so that I can examine it.  I'll assume that a complete proper reinstall will take care of the problem.

Are any other citrix users of this server having problems? if not then this is not likely to be a server issue

I would say this was a client based issue rather than a network issue i will post a solution to fix the client and also one if the client works strait away for you then you know its a network issue.

Totally remove the client then run the User Hive Clean up tool as an admin this will remove the client and the users profile which also holds citrix data. (****Make sure to back up the users profile, so you dont loose any docs or anything as this holds there desktop, my docs etc etc*****) . then reinstall the clientif this doesnt fix it please post the log you get in event manager.

NETWORK SOLUTION

Have there been any firewall changes that could impact the user. Windows remote desktop uses port 3389 where the ICA client uses 1494 (2598 with session reliability), so you may be able to make a remote desktop connection but not an ICA one. Run a telnet session from a session on the users laptop on those citrix ports e.g "telnet TargetIP 1494) if it times out heres your problem.

I hope this helps,
