Question

Citrix local V: drive mapping slowness

Asked by: msCCare

Hi,

We are having a speed issue copying data "from" the local C: drive of a user (mapped as the V: drive) connected to Citrix via web interface using Citrix Secure Gateway. We have 2 citrix servers and the speed issue is only on one of them. The one that is having the problem is a virtual machine hosted on Hyper-V. The other server is a physical DL360 G5. Both servers are on the same subnet on gigabit switch. Internet connection is a T1.

Speed transfer rates to the DL360 G5 is 150 KB/sec.
Speed transfer rates to the VM is lower than 30 KB/sec.

Now this only happens when connecting through the web interface and opening up the published ICA application (going through Citrix Secure Gateway). If I connect to that web interface using the local IP address (also adding a DNS entry in my hosts file), I receive the same results.

It goes much quicker:
1) If i open a direct ICA connection to the server (using Citrix Program Neighborhood, using internal IP connected through VPN).
2) If i open an RDP connection to the server connecting my local drives and mapping \\tsclient\c (also connected through VPN)

This tells me that there is no network problem or issue with Hyper-V. It appears to be something specific with the web interface\secure gateway. And it is not an internet speed issue because it transfers to the DL380 very fast.

Here is what our environment looks like:
Citrix 4.5 build 3600 SP 2006.10 Hotfix Rollup Pack 4 (PSE450W2K3R04)

Assistance is appreciated.

Try to set the "DisableTaskOffload" value to 1 on all VMs (is your CSG virtualized as well?), it can have strange effects.
The article below is for Virtual Server, but a similar issue exists, for example, for XenServer 5.5 that gets resolved if this value is set.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm not sure if this would solve the problem because it only happens when connected to the virtual server when going through the CSG (physical server as well).  All traffic is routed through CSG.  We also went straight into the server through ICA file bypassing CSG (all from the internet) and it went much quicker.  It seems to be a Citrix issue.

As I said: the "task offloading" can have strange effects, up to the point that the connection speed depends on the client OS, and probably the room temperature, air humidity, and moon phase. I've had it happen that http requests to a virtualized server (without the registry entry) from a Thin Client during a firmware update were down to a crawl, an XP machine in the same subnet as the TC could download the same file from the same webserver lightning fast.
So again: is your CSG virtualized as well?

by: msCCarePosted on 2009-10-29 at 08:23:13ID: 25694699

no, the CSG is a physical server.  According to the article, the task offloading setting would be changed on the Hyper-V host.  Did you want me to try it on the virtual server?

Yep.

by: msCCarePosted on 2009-10-29 at 08:41:26ID: 25694917

would it have to be done on the CSG server as well?

by: oBdAPosted on 2009-10-29 at 08:47:22ID: 25694983

You could give it a try if it doesn't help to do it on the VM alone. If the situation doesn't change even then, you can always delete the entry again.
Another article to look into in this context might be this (though this probably would throttle the connection every time):
An update to turn off default SNP features is available for Windows Server 2003-based and Small Business Server 2003-based computers
