Question

Xen Desktop On Linux fastest bootup?

Asked by: ambush276

I was thinking about is this possible?

so i have my citrix server, and the on the workstation computers i install the thinnest possible version of linux (not sure which one?) tha would be in command prompt. Then after that boots go straight into xen desktop login. So like a really fast boot into Xen Desktop and have that Xen Desktop app run off of linux? So when the computer boots basically it goes to linux bootup and im not sure which is the lightest  linux OS out there, and from that linux boot it goes directly to the XEn login?

that way the bootup is incredibly fast and then the XEN login is incredbly fast as well..

creating a great enviornment?

anyway let me know is this is possible because it would seem

1. save the company TONS of money by not buying Windows Licenses.
2. Fast work situation.
3. Overall just better experience.

this brings be to situation # 2... for laptops?

i guess there is no way to really do laptops accept over a VPN? but that would seem to slow.. just have basically install disk and wipe disk for laptops and have people just use the standard VPN to acess these laptops..? or will XEn work well over the internet?

maybe provision a WIFI app or internet auto connect in the linux b ootup on a laptop before XEN installs (or just install it ontop of windows for the laptops?

thanks!

you should also have an exteranl ip for your citrix aswell as internal for your company. I.E. you can access your citrix environment from outside your network so vpn is not needed unless you actually want to connect vpn then to citrix...which i also havbe set up in my network and i do not see a problem with speed to be honest.

erm smallest linux....probably 'puppy inux' or 'damn small linux'

you would have to check compatability for access citrix but shouldnt see a problem.

my second solution is for your company to invest in some thin clients (terminals) just incase you dont get what i mean. its a computer designed to connect to citrix. all it has is a port for power, mouse, keyboard and monitor. since it conects to your citrix server, no need for all the hardware inside it like a normal pc.

HP WYSE terminal (thin client) is the one i use....perfect!! fast boot and every thing just like u wanted :P

what but those linux machines should work perfectly fine i guess.. for testing at least..

now on the other front..

what about laptops...

is there a way for a bootup to a like WIFI conenction card or lan conection and then straight to Citrix login?

by: hexemesPosted on 2009-11-08 at 19:10:47ID: 25773169

you can have citrix run as start up and in full screen mode..would that not work, so basically laptop turns on and then connects straight to your citrix server and they can just log in...unless you mean when they arent connected to your network? like at home?

by: ambush276Posted on 2009-11-08 at 19:19:58ID: 25773195

what about if they are at a hotel and they need to connect via WIFI? (liek WEP)

they need to input a password and get connected to the internet before they can use citrix? so there needs to be a frontend right for networking? ?

also just curious are there any videos that truly show the speed of these citrix servers etc?? a setup?

thanks!

also im just kind of perusing this subject of virtulization: the applicaiton streaming is that more efficent vs. just having fully automated computers? it seems that automated computers would be faster? no?

the application streaming seams somewhat pointless in the sense they have to redownload the app each time they want to use it?

just not really sure or i guess confused... and also the advantages between Citrix vs. Vmware.

this is kind of a second question but i guess i will ask it here?

ok well firstly i would probably have to give a biast answere to citrix as i am mopst familiar with it. were are goign on the thesis that your citrix server or servers are of decent specs?

and the best part about linux is that you can install microsoft office for example onto the server and then enable users to be able to use it when they log onto citrix so what ever software you are wanting to give out to people you will only have to install it the once :) thats my best part.

ok secondly, and i suggest this to your laptops only because of the senario you just gave me, how about setting up sonmething in group policy, liek the stricktest group policy you can think of, where there are no icons on the desktop, no access to pretty much anything, set the background to default or what ever, basically make the machine 'useless' to standard users or to whom ever you chose to assign the group policy too 'on the laptops only' thats key otherwise it will apply to that same user logging in on pc's aswell :P

and basically only allow a citrix shortcut on the desktop. so all they can do is click on that oh and allow networking. I.E. so they can connect to wireless network etc... and if needs be, if you choose not to set up an external citrix connection, (on my laptops i have 'citrix internal' shortcut for userrs on their laptop and 'citrix external' for users on their laptop so they know which one to pick depending where they are. i know this all sounds a little far fetched maybe but its easy to do when you think about it. oh and if u really want to narrow things down or get technical you can even create a batch file. im sure you can make a short batch file to run as log in script so that once an internet connection has been found citrix automatically loads up.

i hope this is making some sence, it is 03:42 in the morning lol

yea i see what you are saying?

but still teh app streaming is kind of weird? at least to my viewing?

so basically on a mac i can use windows programs etc??? but im confused on the fact about what the app streaming actualyl is? so with app streaming its normal computer setup, and then when they want to use an app? it streams to them? isint that kind of a waste of bandwith?

so they have normal computers without any programs? making the bandwith being choked badly by streaming apps everywhere?

and i guess what you are saying is then u can run windows only programs on mac?

still confused on wether going Full virtualization or streaming apps? not really sure where the benefits are .. etc?

hey sorry about the late reply.

i was not aware of the apple mac situation.. im not 100% on the compatability runing windows apps but come to think of it...citrix is practically just remote desktop to a server desktop set up for the specific server..so actualyl it should work becuase you are not using the program on the apple mac (or whichever local machine) but on the citric server its self..

out of curiousitym how many computers have you  got connecting or wanting to connect to citrix? how many citrix servers have you got?

i have 3 citrix servers and about 100 clients using them, i have load balancing enabled so it automatically signs people onto the emtiest server so i get about 30+ onto each server...

citrix is designed to use less bandwidth when streaming.. but unless you are watching videos it hardly uses any at all...because all that is goign backwards and forwards are mouse and keyboard signals. (and a visual link) sooooo...that means running programs doesnt use bandwidth but just uses the servers processes etc... tbh i have pretty sucky servers lol and i havent ever had a problem

the reason i am so sure about bandwidth is i had one of them 'usb internet dongles' that i got from o2 that you pay like £15 a month and you get a gig of usage...well i was concernd about how much usage i would use (download and upload bandwidth) so i was not to go over my limit (you get a little monitor that tells you how much you are using etc..) and much to my suprise i did not use hardly any :)
i did tests like, watch videos, download, write text in word, use every day applications.. all worked fine because it is running on the server and not trying to drag every thing down from the server to your machine.

citrix is practically RDP in a way lol

well i hope this was of some help to you..

and remember if you think ahh but so many people all on the server using its resources etc...dont worry, thats what it was designed for ;)

need any more help on citrix just ask :P
