1) Did you check that there is no power down , screen saver options on either machine ?

2)What OS's are involved ?

3) Can you reconnect again and does it  continue to work ?

I hope this helps !

i had a similar issue using 10.5 and i turned off fast switching on the remote machine (windows xp) and that took care of the issue.

I appreciate the input.  The grey box appears when I launch PCAnywhere on the remote desktop trying to connect to host.  PCAnywhere just isn't executing properly.  I have uninstalled it, then after removed all folders relating to Symantec including in the registry.  Reinstalled clean, same issue.  I have checked video, this problem is happening on an Acer laptop running Windows XP Pro.  After spending about an hour and a half on the problem and reading about an "/r" switch, I applied this and it actually came right up normally and I setup connection to remote host and it connected.  I couldn't believe it.  Of course I had to reboot to make sure all was well....I never got it to work again, even with the switch.

are both units using the same version of pcanywhere?

also im not sure if this option is avialable under version 12.1 under remote operations try unchecking all the option such as allow connection to multiple host etc.

Also try changing the host screen resolution.

Another test you can run is the following

try connecting to host if unsuccesful the reboot your pc then try again if you are still unable to connect reboot the host and see what happens...post your results

Since it has worked in the past,  would also check the 3 event logs on both machines, as well as any PCANY logs on both machines to see if any errors show up.

I hope this helps !

All systems run PCAnywhere 12.1.  Cannot check PCAnywhere optons as the software will not come up normally, just grey screen with exit available.  Other laptop connections without a hitch so I would say the Host configuration is fine.  Any other suggestions, anyone else heard of this problem.  The problem arose with version 12.  I uninstalled it and installed 12.1 to try and resolve...nothing.

Can any other client version ( 11 ) work with the Host in question ?

Have you contacted Symantec for support ?

11.07.2007 at 05:38AM PST, ID: 20231864
I only have version 12 and 12.1.  There is a thread on Symantec's blog where someone else is having the exact same problem.  They ran through a bunch of stuff and also called support.  After hours on the phone Symantec could not help.  I didn't want to go through that pain and payment just to be back to where I started.  In trying to solve this problem, thinking there was a conflict with another program, brought up msconfig and disabled all startup processed and services (not related to Microsoft), rebooted....same issue.  I am at a lose as to why this is happened.  With nothing running in the background except bare minimum services and after clean install (all leftover folders and files deleted after uninstall including Symantec Registery entries - even ran SYMRT), software launches to only a grey screen.  Only thing it can be is a setting in the register that has nothing to do with Symantec, but has been changed nonetheless.  Needle in a hay stack.  Thanks for all your help.  Sounds like I will have to use LogMeIn on this laptop.

i have the same problem.  only resolution i have found is reboot everytime and let everything load up before opening pcanywhere.  with V12 i found that if i did not run any updates it word great, but 12.1 has all of the V12 updates rolled into it.  Wish i had an answer too...

I'm having the same issue with my copy of v12.1, and so is a client of mine, who purchased pcAnywhere upon my recommendation (he needed v12.1 for Vista compatibility on the host machine).  A workaround that works for me, and keeps me from having to reboot, is to exit the blank pcAnywhere and then do a ctrl-alt-del to kill the "winaw32.exe" process, which will still be running.  More often than not, pcAnywhere will start up properly after that.  Sometimes I have to do this 2 or 3 times in a row.  Unfortunately, this trick does not work as reliably for my client, so I am also interested in finding a true solution to this problem.  Is it possible that pcAnywhere is using IE to do some of its screen display work?  If so, maybe IE7 is needed for reliable screen displays?

02.28.2008 at 11:28AM PST, ID: 21007183
My client spent over an hour with Symantec tech-support, and was not able to resolve the problem.  I uninstalled v12.1 on his local WinXP machine, and installed pcAnywhere remote v11.5.  That works perfectly, and it still supports remote printing from the WinVista host machine running v12.1.  The one thing that was common to both of our computers was that we both had IE6, instead of IE7.  I have since installed IE7 on my machine, and so far it looks likes that has fixed the v12.1 problem -- I have yet to see the gray, blank screen after upgrading to IE7.

02.28.2008 at 10:11PM PST, ID: 21011276
Brief followup: I've been testing pcAnywhere v12.1 numerous times today, after installing IE7, and this evening it finally showed up with the blank, gray screen again, so it's not fixed.  The crtl-alt-del trick (ending the winaw32.exe process) still worked, and only needed to be done once.

I have seen this on a server running as a host using Net-OP.  I fixed it by disabling The No-Execute memory protection feature in the BIOS.  I have the same problem with PC-Anywhere and will be trying this on one server to see if it works.  I will post the results.  Will not know for a while since a reboot fixes it. ;-))
