The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

You can use a Firewall (I use Sonicwall) with Global VPN Client Licences.
Or there are SSL VPN Boxes available with Sonicwall which is purely for this Purpose.
More details here --> http://www.sonicwall.com/us/products/Secure_Remote_Access.html

Hi,

You can also go for an  open source VPN Solution like:

The cost may differ from Country to Country.
I can rate them for the intial support they give as very good in setting up the box.
Then after that i manage it.

you could just use Terminal Services...  this is a feature present in windows server OS.
of course, you'll want a corporate-type firewall at the location where the server resides.

but the other employees can use remote desktop client, which comes with XP / Vista.

what OS server
what OS clients?

what sort of data and apps (if any) need to be shared?

in short, if you have a single SBS Windows server at your office and 10 Windows XP clients who all need to share a single file folder, you can accomplish this task with OUT spending another dime assuming you server and clients are already licensed properly.

please describe your environment and needs in more detail if possible.

Our server is windows server 2003
and our client machine are windows xp.

We like to share common folders on the windows 2003 file system aswell as develop application using MS VIsual Studios.

If performance is a high priority, I submit a thin client type solution such as RDP (terminal services) such as zyper suggested...  several cost and security concerns should be considered if you elect to pursue this path (that said, cost and security concerns should ALWAYS be evaluated before you implement any such solution.)

that said, in a 2003 server and XP client environment, Microsoft has already provided you with a solution that may accomplish your task.

You may be able to run RRAS on your server and the Microsoft Dial Up VPN client in XP to provide the service you're looking for.  It's rather easy and fast to configure (e.g. it's not an unreasonable task for a moderatly experienced tech to set up.)

If you're interested in trying this on your own, I'll dig up and maybe even compose a few instructions to do so.

Do you manage the firewall in front of the hosting server's Internet connection?
