I have just taken over support of an old W2000 (with SP4) server acting as a terminal server and a license server.
Everything has been fine for about 4 or 5 years relating to external clients connecting via terminal services.
Recently 1 client got the message "Terminal services temporary license expires in X days". When the X reached 0 the user stopped being able to connect. If i try and connect i get the error "The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol. Please try connecing to the remote computer again or contact your server administrtor." Event ID 1004 "The terminal server cannot issue a client license" is logged in the System event log on the server. Until recently i was able to connect via TS successfully.
On the server in Terminal Services Licensing i get 2 items:
1. "Existing Windows 2000 License" Type=Built-in, Total=Unlimited, Available-Unlimited, Issued=14
2. "Temporary Licenses for Windows 2000 Terminal Services Client Access License" Type=Temporary, Issued=14
When 2 is selected 10 issued licenses are shown (including my PC name) but all with "Expires On" dates that have already expired
I have tried reactivating the license server but it did not seem to make any difference.
To clarify between 5 and 10 remote users have been connecting via TS for 4 or 5 years but suddenly some are no longer able to connect but others are still able to.
Is my problem that the 10 cals originally purchased have disappeared and need reinstalling or is something else going on.
I have seen tips re deleting Terminal Server licensing registry keys but do not want to risk disconnecting the other working users.
