When a PC is locked overnight, the username and password fields are greyed out in the morning.
Some users report the fields are white but they cannot type in username or password
The user has to restart the PC to logon.
If the user logs off at night there is no problem.
This problem started recently after doing Windows updates.
A search of expert exchange found a problem with early version of VNC. I uninstalled VNC but made no difference.
I have also tried resetting the local security policy as mentioned in another search.

I have uninstalled KB887742 & KB935843 Hotfix on 4 PC's, also removed them from Altiris Patch Management so theywill not be reinstalled.
So far no unlocking problem on these PC's, early days though
Awaiting further feedback over this week from the the users of these PC's
If feedback is positive, I will try this on more of the problem PC's
We are seeing some of the same issues at my company, my network systems department are pointing to an application that I support (Tivoli/Passlogix desktop password reset application 'DPRA"). I am trying to rule out this app, and was interested to see if Barfoots also has this app deployed in his system.
Thanks for the assistance
Our company does not use DPRA
I suspect our problem occurs when Altiris does an audit of the PC when it is locked
The problem PCs have the firewall turned off (turned off to allow install of Altiris Client) and autoupdates configured for WSUS.
I have had some success by:
- Turnithe firewall back on
- Turn auto updates off
- Do not use screensaver
The remaining problem PCs do not have greyed out logon.
When logon is entered the pc goes to blue screen, restarting is the only option
Thank you for your reply, I am going to send this information to my Network systems Dept, and will also ask them to keep me updated on any progress on our side. If there is anything I can provide to help your situation, I will post. Just a note, we also use altiris, but I am not an admin for this system, so I do not know how we have it configured.

I had that issue with early XP machines and old VNC. Make sure the service is not still running in the background. However, if it wasn't happening before the Windows updates, I am doubtful VNC would be to blame.
Having done a little digging, you may have also seen; "is auto-logon enabled"?
I would also check power management settings and hibernation. They can cause odd problems from time to time. The options may have somehow been reset with updates.
