The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Vista system stopped listening for/allowing remote desktop connections TO it.

Tags: Microsoft, Windows Vista, Ultimate, RDP Remote Desktop
My wife's Vista Ultimate computer has stopped allowing remote desktop connections into it.

I can ping the machine's local IP.
Remote desktop connections are enabled.

It appears to not be listening or accepting the connection.

If I telnet to that machine on port 3389, I get a connection failed message. EVEN if I do it from that machine to the localhost.

A little history: She was running a version of Trend Micro PC-Cillin that expired. The firewall was enabled on Trend. She bought a newer version of Trend, uninstalled the previous version, and attempted to install the latest Trend Internet Security suite.  The install bombed, tried to install some windows update or another, and now will not install at all. It has been removed completely. I think it is running AVG (the free version).

Prior to that a/v change, it was working fine.

Windows firewall is disabled.

Now to make it more interesting - I had her install tightvnc on the machine and it doesn't work either.  It connects and even allows me to telnet to port 5900 and gives me the  TightVNC header, but if I connect with the tightvnc client, it asks for the password, then disconnects me.  If I type the password incorrectly, it tells me it was incorrect.

Any ideas on this one? hehe

Thank you!

John

Uninstall trend micro.
Delete the trend micro directory
Delete trend micro from startup
Make sure there are no services related to trend micro running, if they are disable them.
Go thro your registry with regedit. Delete everything related to trend micro.

Make sure windows firewall is not on.

Try ubuntu linux :) ?

Petur,

Thank you for the reply. I have already done all of that, but still, was unable to get Trend to reinstall. Don't see any trend services running.

She wouldn't dig Linux...  I would have already pushed it on her! hahahaha

normal netstat output:

C:\Users\johnh.PLUSINC>netstat /a

Active Connections

Proto  Local Address          Foreign Address        State
  TCP    0.0.0.0:135            johnh:0                LISTENING
  TCP    0.0.0.0:515            johnh:0                LISTENING
  TCP    0.0.0.0:3389           johnh:0                LISTENING

That is from a working machine.....  It shows port 3389 LISTENING...

My wife's does NOT show that...

If the RDP service is running, and remote access is enabled, shouldn't it be "listening"?

01.17.2008 at 11:44AM PST, ID: 20684624
I'd say so.

I'm sorry, i don't know much bout Windows, but you should see the service listening.

Sad to say, but i'd got for a reinstall if i was you :S

Petur,

That is my last option =(

Surely someone else has seen something similar to this though. I am *special*, but not THAT special! hahahaha

Thank you,

I still have found no fix for this.....    I'm surprised I am the only person who has experienced such a thing...

03.06.2008 at 12:55PM PST, ID: 21064675
You are not the only one.  I have the same problem, but different circumstances.

I changed the port of RDP and created a firewall rule to let it through, but RDP will not communicate through it even though it apparently is listening.  I can't get a response if I try to telnet into the new port, but if I disable rdp and run something like bittorrent on the same port, I can confirm that the port is forwarding properly.

Traffic gets to the computer but for some reason RDP will not do anything with it.  I wish there was an answer for this.

lordicarus:  By chance, did you happen to install Trend antivirus at some point and uninstall it?  That is the only thing I can think of that may have messed with the system...

Very interesting that you can run something on 3389 and actually access it, great thinking, that confirms that the link layer is working or that would not function.  Something specific to RDP I guess... hrmmm

I actually just reimaged the computer and it works fine now.  It was a fresh image about 7 days ago... reimaged and now it works.  I'm not sure what I changed over the last 7 days, but fortunately I am fixed now.  I wish I could have been more helpful.

lordicarus - Thank you for replying ;)  Glad you got your system going... Have a wonderful weekend!

PlusInc - Have you found a fix for this issue.
I am unfortunately running into the exact same problem.  I also had Trend Micro running and it expired so I uninstalled it and started using Avast.  I can't be sure but I think this was right around the same time that RDP stopped working for me.  I have double checked that all the setings are correct ( I have been using RDP from my work machine to home for about 5 years and have never had an issue).  I also installed a Windows Home Server about the same time and I installed a Connector program on every computer on my LAN.  So, that could be the issue as well.

Let me know if you have had any luck!

Thanks,
Jay

Jay,

Unfortunately I have not found the issue, but I am now 99.9% sure it is Trend that killed it. I will have to call Trendmicro about it and see if they can assist. I also am considering trying SP1 this weekend in an attempt to fix it ;)

I will keep you posted!

This is the temporary solution that I came up with...

net localgroup "Administrators" "NT Authority\Network Service" /add

Rebooted and RDP is working again...

I also had to run the Trend tool to totally remove Trend and then reinstall it again... ugh

I will close this ticket in a couple days and award everyone who made suggestions equal points.  Thank you for your help.
