The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

There's 2 ways to do this:

1. install a X Windows package on your XP workstation. E.g. the free Xming ( http://www.straightrunning.com/XmingNotes )
After installation, point Xming to connect to your T2000.

2. Install a VNC server on your T2000 and connect using a vnc client

http://www.softpanorama.org/Xwindows/VNC/vnc_on_solaris.shtml

Both links contain info on how to install and configure this.

Hi robocat,

I followed the 2nd link u gave. I installed as per the tutorial. But when i start vncviewer and try to connect the host machine at any of the display it says unable to connect, connection refused. I also tried following:

bash-3.00# /etc/dt/config/Xsetup
/usr/openwin/bin/xset:  unable to open display ""
/usr/openwin/bin/xmodmap:  unable to open display ''
bash-3.00#

U can see the errors returned. Please remember my Sun T2000 dosnt have any display card...

Check if you have an Xvnc process running. If not, try to start the vncserver again.

If you can't start the vncserver, there's a logfile in the .vnc directory of the users's home directory that will tell what's going wrong.

BTW: Xsetup is a GUI program, you need an X-Windows display to run it.

Hi Robocat..

I tried as u said.. here is the output...

Add /usr/openwin/bin to your PATH
Add /usr/openwin/bin to your LD_LIBRARY_PATH

If you encounter any more similar errors, add the correct directory to your PATH variable.

Correction:

Add /usr/openwin/lib to your LD_LIBRARY_PATH

Hi robocat,

Well that did the trick but i am getting a crapy window with a terminal open i it. its probably twm. I want gnome (jave desktop) on my vncviewer. How shuld i do that. Following is the output of .xstartup file vnc is using...

bash-3.00# cat xstartup
#!/bin/sh

[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
twm &
bash-3.00#

02.22.2008 at 08:52AM PST, ID: 20959161
Also i declared PATH using following commands,

 export PATH=/usr/openwin/bin:$PATH
 export LD_LIBRATY_PATH=/usr/openwin/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

But as soon as i logged out and logged in the path is gone from $PATH variable. I am new to solaris. I linux i know that path can be declared in .bashrc file. But in which file i should declare this settings so every time the root user logges in the varibles will in $PATH. I am a root user.

>I want gnome (jave desktop) on my vncviewer.

Comment out the twm window manager and the xterm and add something like:

gnome-session&
gnome-terminal --geometry 80x24+10+10 --title="$VNCDESKTOP Desktop"

You'll have to experiment a bit to get the correct path to get this to work.

>I linux i know that path can be declared in .bashrc file.

Depending on your shell, you can do a similar thing in a .profile file.
