The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Need linux solution similar to Logmein

Before suggesting VNC or something similar, please read.  I am looking for something similar to Logmein, only for Linux.  But here is the issue, I have no access to the firewall on our network.  I can't personally open or request anyone open any ports.  Currently, I can access our Windows computers behind this firewall without my having to access the firewall by using Logmein.  But since Logmein does not work on Linux computers, I need something similar to reach a Linux box.  Is there something I can install that will allow similar access without configuring the firewall?

What kind of access do You need? Text based, graphical?

In fact You do need VNC or similar for gfx access. The concept follows.
There are two machines, work-box and home-box.
home-box need to run ssh server.
work-box need to run vnc (or similar). From work-box You are logging into home-box with ssh. Ssh is capable of port-forwarding, so within this connection You can forward connection back to Your work-box - to vnc.
If this is set-up, just run vncclient and connecto to localhost. To the home-box, but ssh will forward the connection to work-box.

If You look for some gui application for that - i'm now aware of such. Maybe because I never needed one. I was able to configure it by-hand.

Both are linux boxes?
from work-box: ssh login@home-box -R 1234:localhost:1234
where 1234 is just example port
leave this session open while You out of office
When running vncclient from home-box, connect to localhost:1234 rather than remote:1234

Thanks for the responses
ravenpl--I would want a gui as I am still new to linux.  I would be using XP to access a linux box, and as I mentioned, I can't open any ports on the firewall to allow anything to the linux box.  However, I have complete access to the box from the inside.  With Logmein, I don't have to allow anything.  I just install the software on a windows system and then I can access it fine.  That is what I need on the linux computer, and I'm not sure if what you suggested would work in this senario.  It was a little hard for me to follow what you were suggesting.
ahoffmann--don't those have to have ports forwarded?

as long as the firewall does not look at layer 7, you can (mis)use port 80 or 443 ;-)
But ask your admin first if it is legal this way.

Logmein makes a product called Hamachi (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp).
You can configure the Linux version of Hamachi on your linux Box, then configure your windows XP computer to connect to the same network you setup on the linux Box (or vice versa).  Basically it let's you setup a 1 to 1 VPN - Virtual Private Network.

The Linux Version of Hamachi is actually only a Text version, but there are others out there that have put out a Graphical Version that you can install called Ghamachi that will do many of the same things the Windows Version does.

Once you have this setup, you can either connect via VNC, which would be the easiest way, or you can connect with NX's No Machine product (they have a free 2 user version).  The nice thing about NoMachine is that it REALLY makes it like you're physically at the computer, the technology is amazing and MUCH faster than VNC.  However the setup on it does require some work and it's not quite as easy as VNC.

So  here are your steps.
1.   Install the Windows Version of Hamachi on your XP machine.
2.   Setup your VPN name and password
3.   Install the Linux version of Hamachi on your Linux Box.
4.    Optional - Install Ghamachi GUI for Hamachi
5.   Follow instructions to Join Linux Box to Hamachi Network
6.    Install VNC Server on Linux Box.
7.   Set Access on VNC to NOT require consent, DO set a password for access.
8.    Install NX Client Software on Linux Box
9.    Install NX Node Software on LInux Box
10.  Install NX Server Software on Linux Box
11.  Configure NX Server settings as per instructions to allow access
12   Configure user access account for NX group.
13.  Install VNC client and NX Clients on Windows Machine.

You're ready to go, you can now access your Linux Box from any machine with Hamachi installed and joined to the Network.  You can access the machine either via NX or VNC webaccess, or using the  NX client or VNC client, which usually gives you better performance.
