Question

How to change a UltraVNC password

Asked by: ssvarc

I'm trying to change the password on an existing UltraVNC installation. There is a repeater on a server and UltraVNC clients running on client computers (I think as services). There is already a password. I would like to switch it.

When I go to a computer and navigate to the UltraVNC "Edit settings" and change the password, it doesn't "stick". And when I go to the server and look for the settings there I can't find any.

Need assistance.

Sounds like you need to update the VNC password on the server. Try these password changing instructions from the FAQ (preferably by using the machine directly, alternatively over a VNC connection to the server which will probably boot you off once you have updated the settings):
http://forum.ultravnc.info/viewtopic.php?t=3276

If you are having trouble afterwards updating the password your clients are using, keep this faq in mind:
http://forum.ultravnc.info/viewtopic.php?t=9279
The client run as a service and the regular client application use different password saves.

Does not appear to have a server password. The password settings are grayed out on the server and the number of characters are off.

Thanks for the warning on the client password service pitfall - so how do I get around it? I seem to be having that exact problem.

Furthermore, I would assume that what is running on the server is the UltraVNC Repeater.

There is a server at the office with a bunch of connected client computers. I'm at home on my home computer. As I understand it, I'm running the UltraVNC viewer, the office server is running the UltraVNC repeater, and the office computers are running the UltraVNC Server as a service (aka as silent).

I see. I'm a standard VNC and xtightvnc user myself so I'm less familiar with UltraVNC, you may have to change the password on the individual host machines if there's no setting on the repeater. As for changing the password in the service, how do you normally access the service? Do you get a system tray icon or menu when it's running? Try looking in the settings for your UltraVNC viewer service in Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services. I'd try using those to change your locally stored password.

If all else fails, the website does have information about where information (including password info) is stored in the windows registry, but making changes to the registry can be dangerous so I would advise against it except as a last resort. It would be better to wait for someone with more knowledge of UltraVNC to instruct you if the above methods do not work.

"I see. I'm a standard VNC and xtightvnc user myself so I'm less familiar with UltraVNC,"

Any particular reason that you use those over UltraVNC? UltraVNC has SingleClick, where a customer can download a small kilobyte file and it connects them to your computer automatically.

" you may have to change the password on the individual host machines if there's no setting on the repeater."

Exactly. And I don't know how.

" As for changing the password in the service, how do you normally access the service?"

I don't. I use it when I connect to this computer via the Repeater on the server.

" Do you get a system tray icon or menu when it's running?"

No.

" Try looking in the settings for your UltraVNC viewer service in Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services. I'd try using those to change your locally stored password."

This was a good idea, but when I looked there were no password or any settings for that matter.

"If all else fails, the website does have information about where information (including password info) is stored in the windows registry, but making changes to the registry can be dangerous so I would advise against it except as a last resort. It would be better to wait for someone with more knowledge of UltraVNC to instruct you if the above methods do not work."

I guess.

Let me add one point: This whole UltraVNC setup was put in place by a previous admin who left on bitter terms. He handed over passwords and such but not much more. I'm trying to (in a easy sort of way, as this is not code) reverse engineer his setup.

What OS is your VNC Server running? If Linux, then usually you have a /.VNC (or something similar, it depends on the distro and VNC version) folder in the home folder of the user it is running as, and in there there is a password file. Just delete that file, stop the vncserver daemon, start it again and it should ask for a fresh password.

The client computer is WinXP and the server computer is WinServer 2003. No Linux.

Any instructions for these OS's? (As far as I can tell, the client computer has an UltraVNC Server service running and the server has an UltraVNC Repeater service running. [Just checked. The service on the server is called UltraVNC Server, but I wonder if this a generic label and it's the repeater, or if it's correctly labeled and the server is running a Server service.])

For windows Servers it is different, there I wouldn't know.

Hi ssvarc

uvnc 1.0.4 and 1.0.5.x use ultravnc.ini for store password, not registry.
you need real clean-up of registry entry of any vnc (orl, realvnc, tightvnc, ultravnc, etc)
http://www.advantig.com/files/UltraVncReset.zip
clean, then.. shutdown wait 30sec and cold start (do not restart)

uvnc 1.0.5.3 have a tool call edit settings (uvnc_settings.exe) UltraVNC Settings... tab Security.

stop uvnc_service or close winvnc before doing any change.

Start... All Programs... UltraVNC .... right click and run as administrator on "Edit Settings"
security alert prompt... select Yes
tab Security, vnc password: input new password... OK
start uvnc_service or restart windows or run winvnc

or

browse to folder where UltraVNC is installed
right click on uvnc_settings and select run as administrator...
security alert prompt... select Yes
tab Security, vnc password: input new password... OK
start uvnc_service or restart windows or run winvnc

So I can't do this while remoting in?

If I'm on my home computer and I'm using UltraVNC to remote into a computer at work via a the server at work, can I while remoted in change the password for UltraVNC on the work computer? If I can, could you please explain what steps I would need to do?

And that aside, I'm not following you clearly. If "uvnc 1.0.4 and 1.0.5.x use ultravnc.ini for store password, not registry." then why do I need "real clean-up of registry entry of any vnc (orl, realvnc, tightvnc, ultravnc, etc)"?

Thanks for your answer so far, and this seems like the right track.

One last question on your answer above.

You seem to give a way to reset 1.0.5.3, but by 1.0.4 and lower versions of 1.0.5x you stop your instrunctions by the cleaning of the registry (which I've already asked, if UltraVNC doesn't store the password there, then why clean it?) and don't explain what to do next.

Thanks.

Hi ssvarc:

Forget UltraVncReset this is for previous versions.

To change ultravnc password remotely you can use VNC Password Set 2.0

This program allows you set the password of your VNC server on your LAN. It also lets you set alternate credentials for connecting to the remote machine. Supports UltraVNC, RealVNC, and TightVNC.

abolinhas:

I don't have a password on the server (at least I don't think so after checking - how can I verify one way or the other?), but rather each client computer has it's own password. Some client computers are running older versions of UltraVNC.

If you could give me detailed instructions for changing these passwords (and taking into account both the older and newer versions of UltraVNC) and if it can be done remotely, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!
This definitely looks like the right thing. I'm away for the weekend, but I will be trying this on Mon. Check back Mon. late afternoon, I will report how it went.

by: ssvarcPosted on 2009-06-08 at 22:21:08ID: 24578344

I've checked it out and it appears to work flawlessly, with one caveat. It's a non-freeware piece of software that costs $59.

How does one go about it without paying through the nose? It appears that the program is just automating what would be manual scripts and such. I'm prepared to do that, I just lack the knowledge of what to do.
