Hello sivaji,

nice to meet you!

Where did you get the rpm file from? I'm not aware of a 4.1 rpm for AIX!

There is a version 3.3 rpm for AIX, which is in the toolbox or here - http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/power/software/aix/linux/toolbox/alpha.html

The source of 4.1 is here - http://www.realvnc.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi - but you will need the gcc and gcc-c++ compilers to install it. They're also available in the toolbox (see above).

Hi sir,
My plesure to meet you sir!
Where did you get the rpm file from?
     http://www.realvnc.com/
     File name: vnc-4_1_3-unixsrc.tar
gcc and gcc-C++  not installed on server?

Sir on server we already have VNC 3.3 now we what to do upgrade to VNC 4.1 ?
Give me steps to upgrade to VNC 4.1 OR complete installation of VNC 4.1?
And where can I get fileset for 4.1 upgrade or instatllation.

Thanking you in advance.

by: woolmilkporcPosted on 2009-10-02 at 01:52:23ID: 25476082

>> vnc-4_1_3-unixsrc.tar <<

- This is a tarball containing the source distribution, not an rpm.

>> gcc and gcc-C++  not installed on server? <<

- Check with 'rpm -qa | grep gcc' and 'rpm -qa | grep g++'.
If it's not there, you'll have to get it from the toolbox and install it using 'rpm -ivh ...'

by: sivakumar_expertsPosted on 2009-10-02 at 02:00:15ID: 25476118

i checked the rpm is not there ...
I will install the rmp!

Sir were i will get rmp for 4.1? i need steps for instatllation VNC4.1? or how to upgrade?

Thanks.

by: woolmilkporcPosted on 2009-10-02 at 02:24:25ID: 25476216

There is no rpm for 4.1!

You need the two compilers and the tarball vnc-4_1_3-unixsrc.tar which you already have.

Next you'll have to compile the source.

After 'gunzip'ing and un'tar'ing the tarball you will find a README where they explain how to proceed.

sir i will ready the file ! i let u know.

by: woolmilkporcPosted on 2009-10-02 at 05:55:16ID: 25477384

Well, let me give you some detail.

You need from toolbox

gcc-4.2.0-3.aix5.3.ppc.rpm
gcc-cplusplus-4.2.0-3.aix5.3.ppc.rpm
libgcc-4.2.0-3.aix5.3.ppc.rpm
libstdcplusplus-4.2.0-3.aix5.3.ppc.rpm
libstdcplusplus-devel-4.2.0-3.aix5.3.ppc.rpm

Download the packages, cd to the directory where you downloaded them to and issue

rpm -ivh gcc-4.2.0-3.aix5.3.ppc.rpm

- repeat for every package above.

On AIX you need to have installed

- all filesets starting with bos.adt...
- all filesets starting with X11.adt.... , X11.base..., X11.compat..., X11.motif...

For VNC you need  vnc-4_1_3-unixsrc.tar.gz

Download it (if you haven't done so already), cd to the directory where you downloaded it to and issue

gunzip vnc-4_1_3-unixsrc.tar.gz
tar -xvf vnc-4_1_3-unixsrc.tar

cd to ./vnc-4_1_3-unixsrc/unix

and issue

./configure
make

Then proceed with

vncinstall

as written in the README file.

Good luck!

sir if i do the above activity which u said?  It will over write the excising VNC 3.3 --- i think yes?

if VNC 4.1 not come up what should i do?  Sir its production box which we installing we need not do any R&D . sir suggest me how can over come this issue. Client is sitting on my head.

Sir sorry for bothering u!

by: woolmilkporcPosted on 2009-10-02 at 07:41:52ID: 25478362

No, unless you don't run the 'vncinstall' part, you will not overwrite anything.  So stop after running 'make' and test beforehand!

Btw. which component of VNC do you need?

The vncviewer is not a problem, but I strongly assume that we will not be able to build a 4.1 VNV server on AIX!

That's because VNC 4.1 does no longer have an own X server, but tries to use an existing X11 source tree, which is not available from IBM.

The open source versions of X11 don't install easily on AIX, or, to be clear, it's nearly impossible!

thanks for u e support sir! i will keep u post.

Hi sir,

I seen one of u r post http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Unix/AIX/Q_24543562.html

if we have password what will be the script change.

by: woolmilkporcPosted on 2009-10-11 at 09:31:06ID: 25546428

Hi sivaji,

what do you mean with >> if we have password ... << ?

The script will "normally" ask for the password of hscroot at each of the HMC's.

If you have passwordless access (e.g. public key authentication), it will not ask.

That's all. No changes needed.

But this is quite another subject, I fear.

How's your VNC installation going? All straight?

by: sivakumar_expertsPosted on 2009-10-11 at 09:54:03ID: 25546499

Sir we not able to install VNC 4.1 , it throwing lots of errors. YES that was anoher post.

i had tried to implemnt the script on one of the LPAR , but its show error

ssh: hmc1: no address associated with name

by: woolmilkporcPosted on 2009-10-11 at 10:02:53ID: 25546532

I wrote in the other Q:

Change the line "HMCS= ..." to contain the hostnames of your HMC machines, e.g.
HMCS="hmc1 hmc2".

Of course hmc1, hmc2 are only examples how an HMC could be named.
You will have to supply the actual name(s) or IP address(es) of your HMC(s).

Hi sir,

How to find raid level of local SCSI desk ?

by: woolmilkporcPosted on 2009-10-12 at 07:44:59ID: 25551675

Hi,

again another subject here -

A single disk can't have a RAID level.

Unless you have a RAID adapter (check with lsdev), there can only be software RAID 0 or RAID 1 (or both) under AIX, which is implemented at the Logical Volume (not Disk) level.

Check your LVs using lslv lvname and look for RAID0 (STRIPE WIDTH/STRIPE SIZE present) or RAID 1 (COPIES 2 or 3).

by: sivakumar_expertsPosted on 2009-10-12 at 08:34:42ID: 25552113

Hi sir sorry for that . i keep on asking dif subjec here.

I have checked we have 2 copys, for u r clarity we have one vg with two pv's</A>, the lv is mirrored,
Now i wat to extend the FS, there is no space in one of pv, we ask to media team to allocate lun to  it. They asking what is the raid leve of the disks.

Then sir i wat to close this subject.right now how can i close can i accept u r VNC steps and close.

Thanks you sir.

Now,
that's a bit strange.

I assume that you're talking about a SAN LUN - by using just AIX commands you have no possibility to see what RAID level your SAN box uses internally.

Maybe your SAN team ask you for the desired RAID level inside the SAN device - well, since you're already using RAID1 (2 copies) in AIX, I'd think the SAN LUN should be of RAID type 5 or even JBOD (no RAID).

Or perhaps your SAN people are smart enough to ask you for the existing software RAID level in AIX - this would make some sense:

If you're using 2 copies (RAID1), which is true in your case, you will also need two additional LUNs instead of one, to keep strictness, and maybe no SAN RAID would be required.
If you were using no RAID (1 copy), which is not true in your case, some SAN RAID would be required (or at least desirable).

Wouldn't it be better to to ask your media team for clarification??
