VNC drops using Windows XP VPN

When I connect to a remote VNC server hosted on Windows Vista from my XP laptop, I frequently get dropped and have to close VNC and the VPN connection to successfully reconnect. I've tried every setting I can find in the viewer--RealVNC--with nothing making a difference. I have also tried setting up a ping to the server to attempt to keep the connection alive. Has anyone solved this issue?
