The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Setup MS VPN server on home network behind Netgear router

Hello Everyone,

I would like to setup a Win 2003 VPN server on my home network so that friends can "dial" into my LAN via VPN and we can play games as if we were all on the same LAN.

Right now I have a virtual machine setup w/ Windows 2003 enterprise server w/ two virtual NICs (I only added a second virtual NIC when the VPN server setup complained I needed two NICs).  I have the server configured as a VPN server and have successfully had a couple of different people connect to the server.

Configuration is something like this:

Internet -> Netgear router (68.x.x.x IP) ->
  VPN server (192.168.0.50 & 192.168.1.1) assigning a pool of IPs 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.10
XP Client #1 (192.168.0.4 assigned from Netgear DHCP)
XP Client #2 (same as above)
  ... etc

Three questions, easy one first:

1) Which ports do I need to configure my Netgear router to redirect to the VPN server?  Currently to make it work I have the router redirecting all traffic to the server.

2) I can ping my friends' connected VPN clients from the VPN server, but I cannot ping them from any other machine on my LAN.  The routing tables all appear correct but I know little about routing and subnets so I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

3) And finally, do I really need two NICs on my VPN server?

Thanks!!!!  Looking forward to your input.
