The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. VPN disconnects?

Having a problem with a VPN I am setting up from home to work.

Office router:      3Com OfficeConnect 3CR860-95 software version 1.03-168

Connecting through:  Cable modem

Home router:      Belkin 4-Port Cable/DSL Gateway Router (F5D5230-4)
            supports IPSEC passthrough
            NAT enabled

VPN Client:      SSH Sentinel 1.3

Client connects fine, has access to resources on remote LAN etc., and then seems to disconnect   - on 3COM router it shows as "PHASE 1 ACTIVE", but VPN on client shows as disconnected. Trying to reconnect does not work - says authorization fails at Phase 2. Status on the 3COM router shows that there is a tunnel open.
If I disconnect the client connection at the 3COM router (by disabling and then re-enabling the VPN) then the client can again connect. If I connect, and then disconnect via the VPN client, I can reconnect again without a problem. It is only if I leave the connection for any period of time that it seems to "time out". The entries in the 3COM router log (between the successful connect and the disconnect) are as follows:

Feb 2 12:40:57 localhost kernel: IKE: IKE --Phase 2 negotiation succeeded with 24.77.xxx.xxx
Feb 2 12:40:57 localhost kernel: IKE: IKE --Sending Notification CONNECTED (0x4000) to peer 24.77.xxx.xxx
Feb 2 12:40:57 localhost kernel: MappedIP: 101014f for EndPoint: 80b8c404
Feb 2 12:42:36 localhost syslogd 1.4-0: restart.

Is that restart message telling me anything?
What other info is needed to help troubleshoot?
