The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

VPN and DNS/NetBIOS/LMHOSTS

Asked by wdunski in Virtual Private Networking (VPN)

Hello experts,
I have just set up a gateway-to-gateway IPSec VPN connection between two networks.
Network 1: Main Site
 - 192.168.1.x/255.255.255.0
Network 2: Remote site
 - 192.168.2.x/255.255.255.0

The tunnel works fine as I can ping and view the network resources and other node by their internal private IP.
I cannot however access the network computers by their NetBIOS name, which is understandable as NetBIOS names do not get broadcasted over VPNs, right?
On our Main Site (network 1) we have a DC that is also a DNS server to which all the computers on that network log into - the computers on the network do not actually log into the domain but they use that server as their default DNS server.
At the remote site, I set that server as the default server also, thinking that it would check the entries on that server and pick up the names of the other computers on the network. Didn't quite work out. I was able to access the internet, which I think means that the server was able to resolve names, but I still could not access any other computers on the network by their name. I then modified the LMHOSTS file and added names manually and it finally worked. My question is, is that the only way to access remote computers by name? Is there a way to automatically load computer names so that I do not have to add it by hand every time a new computer is added to the network?

Thanks in advance.

PS.
Oh yeah, NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled. Not sure if it does anything as I still cant access anything by its name.Start Free Trial
