The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Problem connecting to XP Remote Desktop using Cisco VPN Client

ok, this is the situation.

I need to remotely work on a machine running XP Pro SP2. Remote Desktop is enabled is working fine from the LAN. Whilst doing this I still need to access the local LAN and browse the web using the local gateway.

The PC is connected to a LAN and has a Cisco PIX 506E as the default gateway. This in turn is connected to a broadband modem with fixed IP address. The pix has a public Ip address on teh outside and a privite LAN Address on the inside.

The PC is on the same address space as the PIX inside interface. I have configured the pix to accept both IPSEC and PPTP tunnels, although I'd prefer to use (3DES) IPSEC.

Now, using a remote PC, eg a laptop connected to a dial-up, I connect to the PIX using cisco VPN client 4.0.1 and successfully connect a IPSEC tunnel. I then try to run remote desktop and ... nothing. However I can browse the internet using my local LAN so split-tunnelling seems to be working. btw Windows firewall is off.

OK, so I try to do the same using the PPTP client native to XP. I create the tunnel fine. I connect to remote desktop fine. So I try the same thing on another laptop, and this time the PPTP tunnel does not connect. So it is inconsistent between PCs for no apparent reason?

I'd prefer the fix for the Cisco client, but any help appreciated here.

heres the pix config:
