The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. VPN on 2003 Server w/SMC Cable Modem

I recently put in a new Win 2003 Server.  I had VPN access enabled but discovered that no one on the internal network could connect unless it was turned off.  

There are two NICS in the machine.  One is connected to a router that handles the internal DHCP for the network (range 192.168.16.50-100).  The other is connected to the SMC cable modem which handles the ISP internet function, and is supposedly  there for VPN access.   The network works great, everyone has internet access.  Now I'm trying to set up the VPN piece on the SMC cable modem.  

From what I can see, the cable modem hands off an address to the other router for the internal network, and also is configured to hand out DHCP in the 10.1.10.xx range for VPN users.  (I disabled the DHCP on the server as it was duplicating what the router was doing and I am assuming I was correct in doing so.)    Other than setting up the XP users on the remote side, what else do I need to do?  I did set up a client to log in and it wouldn't connect.  I used the static IP provided by the ISP for the cable modem as the Host IP Address.  I added the DNS information for primary and secondary and let it use the setting to use the remote gateway.   I'm still getting an Error 800 (VPN server unreachable or security parameters may not be configured properly for this connection).  I haven't changed anything on the SMC cable modem as I was told that it was already "set up" for VPN.  Any ideas?
