I am having trouble connecting to my VPN at work. Here is my situation:
Normally, when I am sitting in my office connected directly to the network via Ethernet, I can read e-mail from our Exchange server, browse file shares, etc. In addition, I can connect to our "lab" to perform some work through a PPTP VPN connection. Once connected, I can Remote Desktop to each of the computers in our "lab."
To connect to my office network from home, the company has set up a VPN website that uses Check Point SSL Network Extender. After entering my username and passcode, I am connected to the office network. Launching Outlook enables me to read my e-mail, I am able to see our various file shares, etc. Running "ipconfig" shows that I have a new Ethernet adapter with a GUID-like name, and an IP address on the corporate network. Everything seems perfectly fine, except when I try to establish a connection to our "lab" VPN.
This connection is visible in my Network Connections window, and is listed under the category "Connection Manager." Under device name it says "WAN Miniport (PPTP)." The host address is on a different subnet from my office IP. When I double-click it, the window pops up with the user name and password pre-filled as usual. But when I click connect, it fails to connect.
It says "Establishing secure connection to [IP address]" for about 20 seconds then says "The remote computer did not respond. For further assistance [...] (Error 678)"
Any idea what might be causing this? The exact same laptop hooked directly to the office network establishes this connection just fine. I am not too familiar with the workings of a VPN so forgive me if the question is novice. Does it have something to do with the fact that I am trying to establish a VPN connection through a second VPN connection? I tried connecting the laptop at home directly to my cable modem as well as through my regular wireless connection. Neither works.
