I currently work for a small company with a couple of remote offices across the state and would like to setup a VPN tunnel so that the two small remote offices can share data/applications easily with the main office.
I have searched EE for several hours and have found all kinds of information about VPN but most in a much more complex situation. Like I said earlier this is a pretty small company.
Here is my current setup:
In the main office I have a Windows 2000 server and a Windows 2003 RC2 server (both are running specialized software, that is why I have 2 servers for 6 people) Neither server is running Active Directory so basically setup like a simple peer-to-peer network!
In one remote office I have a Windows 2000 server, again setup without Active Directory so another simple Peer-to-Peer.
In the final remote office, no server just a couple of workstations setup as Peer-to-Peer. I have broadband setup in all three offices, along with a variety of routers.
So I guess I am curious to know:
1. What hardware would be recommended for semi-secure, reliable VPN connection.
2. Do I need to (or would it be better) if I setup Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and/or any other technologies on one or more of the servers.
3. I noticed in other posts several comments about subnets. What type of network settings do I need to consider when setting up a VPN. (Different subnets? IP address recommendations, etc.)
4. What type of software solutions should I consider (if any?)
I know this is a lot to ask, however a complete answer is what I need because I need to have VPN completely setup ASAP. I also know that some of my network configurations could be better, however the way everything is setup now works with our proprietary (crappy) software systems. So the quickest solution would be the best for now!
Thanks in advance for everyone's assistance!
