Opening Word is slow over VPN

I have around 50 users who work remotely most of the time. Each user has a laptop of pretty high spec (1.6Ghz Centrino, 1Gb RAM). The users My Documents folder are redirected to a share. The users connect to the domain via VPN over their home ADSL connections which typically 2-5MB/256Kb.
When they are connected opening Word documents from the My Documents folder takes minutes. The docs do not have to be large, even a 20kb document takes over 1 minute. If the user disconnects, the doc opens fast. Thee problem is obviously caused by Word opening the network copy of the file instead of the local copy but even so this is still a very long wait for a doc to open.
I want to keep the document redirection but can anyone think of a way to speed the document opening up?
