VPN tries to connect automatically & when not called upon to do so

How do I stop a VPN connection (Windows XPsp2) from periodically trying to connect on it's own?

I recently added a new VPN connection (with the networking wizard) in order to access resources at a customer's location. Now what happens, at seemingly random intervals, is that this new VPN login screen pops up as though I selected it to run!

I have an always on connection and I can enter URL addresses all day long, but once in a while this VPN connection thinks it is needed and tries to start.
