Question

Need to know how to setup Watchguard X Edge MUVPN to get DHCP IP address and DNS

Asked by: bcrosby007

I have a user setup on the firebox and the vpn works.  Apparently watchguard says you can setup the user or VPN client up to get a dhcp address and use other dhcp settings(dns wins etc).  I have read their documentation , but it's not clear to me.  Anyone know how this is done?   I need users to resolve netbios names so our existing scripts and other items function properly.

I have 8.6 on all my x20e's so this is going to be difficult for me to answer.  But on mine, if you click the + sign next to VPN, there should be a Mobile User section in there.  Go in there, and you can set the WINS and DNS server info in there.  Also, you might have to force all traffice over the VPN.  This will ensure that WINS information is flowing in the right direction.

As you are running 8.6 version of the software, select VPN > Mobile User from the configuration page:
Under "WINS/DNS Settings for IPSec MUVPN and PPTP Clients"
you can specify DNS and WINS server IP addresses which would be used for remote clients.

As long as configuring IP address using DHCP for MUVPN users is concerned this is still not implemented; you still need to provide virtual IP address manually under user account settings.

For PPTP users however, you can specify the start address of the IP address pool and then the Edge would itself distribute IP address to the remote clients. Edge increments the IP address by 1 and assigns an address to each subsequent PPTP user that connects (up to 10 users).
The IP address that you set as the start of the IP address pool must be available and they must be sequential.

Thank you.

You need to configure the MUVPN client to use a Virtual Adapter.  That way, it is able to pull down connection specific IP settings, such as IP address and WINS server addresses.

Not sure how well this works under SOHOs, but it's reasonably effective under FIreware or WFS.  Not perfect though - you never ghet the domain suffix.

I am running ver. 8.6 of the watchguard software.  So yes, I found the settings that I was looking for.  The WG documentation wasn't very clear on where the dns settings for muvpn were located.  That looks like it should clear up my dns issues with vpn, i'll be testing today. thanks.
