Question

Re: Cisco VPN - Reason 442: Failed to enable Virtual Adapter

Asked by: livinginfl2

My operating system is Windows XP.  I have Cisco VPN software downloaded.  It was working, in that I could get a connection a week ago, then I moved 3-1/2 miles down the road, and now I cannot get a connection at all.  I keep getting this message:  Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client.  Reason 442: Failed to enable Virtual Adapter.  I desperately need to be able to connect to this in order to be able to perform my job.  Thank you for your help.

When you moved did you change ISPs? Did you install any ISP software on your computer? Have you uninstalled and reinstalled Cisco VPN software? For whatever reason XP is having problems with the virtual adapter for the CIsco VPN and any of the above can mess with that.

Sorry, but no, absolutely NOTHING changed, nothing added and nothing deleted.  Also, I have not tried uninstalling and reinstalling simply because it was originally installed by the IS person for my employer down in Florida (I now live in the mountains in western North Carolina).  Since I'm so computer illiterate (I know how to perform the tasks that I need to do in order to do my job, which are mainly just word processing....I'm a home-based medical transcriptionist), I'm loathe to try uninstalling and reinstalling or make any other major changes without his knowledge.  I've been attempting for a couple of weeks now to get him to try to resolve this problem, but he's been indisposed and hasn't gotten back to me.  So, I'm pretty much between the proverbial rock and a hard place!  I've surfed the Web and found several sites that offered possible solutions, but a lot of those are so technical that even if I understood what they were talking about, I'd be afraid to attempt anything of the magnitude they're suggesting for fear of it causing major problems in other areas.  The more simple solutions suggested simply did not work, or had no effect.  Thank you for your suggestions, however.

Do you have XP set for auto updates? If so then it could have made changes either deleting or messing up the Virtual Adapter that Cisco VPN installs.

Most likely your only bet is to uninstall and reinstall the Cisco VPN client software but it is not readily available on their site unless you have a login. You would also need to what the remote gateway is (IP address of the firewall) as well as the group name and password. You can get the IP and group name by opening up the Cisco VPN but the password is going to look like ******.

The uninstall and reinstall is straight forward and you can select yes for all questions during the install. During the install it will temporarily reset all network cards so you will be knocked off the internet during the install.

I'm sorry, but I don't know if I'm set for auto updates.  How do I determine that, and if it is set for that, should I disable that feature?  I believe I still have the printout from where he e-mailed me with the group name and password.  Is the remote gateway, the IP address that appears on the VPN connection screen after the client name?  If so, I have that, also.  I'm not afraid to uninstall and reinstall if I know that I have all of the info I need to do it without causing further problems.  Thanks again for your "expert" suggestions.

For AutoUpdates right click on MyComputer and choose properties.... Click on the tab that says Automatic Updates. You will then be able to tell if they are on or not.

For the IP address it is listed under Host.

Thank you.  I will try those and let you know what happens.  Again, though, if the Auto Updates is enabled, should I disable it?

Its up to you. What happens is that Microsoft puts out patches for improvements, to fix problems and to fix security holes. Autoupdates will automatically install them for you as they are published. This can be good but can also be bad as it could affect any number of other things on your computer (possibly the Cisco VPN client). Some people would rather have the latest updates and feel more secure and others would take the if it isnt broken dont fix it approach.

OK.  Well, I'm working on a temporary computer for another company right now, but when I'm done, I'll check all of this out and see what's going on and what I can do.  I do know that sometimes, a box will pop up out of nowhere and inform me of this or that update and asking if I want to go ahead and do it then or wait, but then other times I have to manually do updates.  Also, and it hasn't done this for a couple of weeks now, when my PC would be shutting down (especially if I had experienced an Internet connection problem and was having to reboot), during the shutdown process, I would get a message telling me not to attempt to turn off the computer because it was installing updates, and there were always 8 of them, and it took a long time for all of them to be installed.  However, it just stopped doing that out of the clear blue, and I have no idea why it ever started doing it or why it stopped.  I'll let you know what happens.

I'v just solved the same problem on my Windows 2000 box by REINSTALLING Cisco VPN Client ver 5.0.03.0530.

Same solution on Vista. Reinstall of same version after error Reason 442.
Worked without reboot even if the installation prompts for it.

I was able to fix this on my computer (XP) by going into the network properties, then going into properties of the VPN adapter(leave it disabled). I then went into the TCP/IP properties and the ip address was set to use ip 0.0.0.0 and I reset it to get an address automatically.
