Question

Unable to resolve UNC names using Microsoft VPN connector when trying to create mapped drives

Asked by: globaldave

Hi all,

I am running into an issue where I am stuck.  I have recently changed out an old SBS2000 domain controller, taken out of service, and replaced with a new Windows 2003 Standard server Domain controller.  I have Routing and Remote Access setup on the server at the moment, but also have the option of doing VPN on the firewall appliance that is on the network.  I am able to connect and authenticate to the RRAS from the Microsoft VPN connector on a Windows XP laptop.  The problem that I am having is that I have to use the IP addess of the file server to connect to shares, which what I really need is to have the server name resolve through the VPN connector so that drives that are mapped inside the network will resolve and reconnect once the user has logged in through the VPN connection.  Looking for the best way to resolve this issue.

Sounds like you're dealing with name resolution issue.  To solve this, you could do it the old school way and create host files on each client system but that can be tedious and should your server(s) name(s) or address(es) change, this will become problematic.  Do you have a way of providing name services on client side?

It's a small law firm, so I guess that would not be too difficult, seeing that there will only be two servers total that they will need name resolution to.  I seem to recall this happening back in the W2K days, been so long I cannot recall how we fixed it back then.  I figured it had something to do with allowing something to pass through on a router, but that was years ago....besides that, this resolution has to go through a VPN tunnel.

True, you could allow either DNS or WINS traffic through your firewall but that would mean that on the client sides, they would have to reference the server side DNS or WINS server which, if these client systems are on a separate network, would mean that they would not be able to resolve host names once disconnected from the VPN...

What would be the mechanism for supplying that?  I thought that would come from the VPN connection.  Is that in the Routing and Remote Access snap-in?  This would make it easier to hand off then to go around and input host files.

Here's one way you could do this:
To enable or disable broadcast name resolution
Open RRAS
Right-click the name of the server on which you want to enable or disable broadcast name resolution, and then click Properties.
On the IP tab, select or clear the Enable broadcast name resolution check box, and click OK.

Ok I have confirmed that the box is checked already.  Still no name resolution going to the laptop after successful negotiation of the VPN connector.  Any other areas I can check to see if I am missing something?

Sounds like it could be Sounds like Q311218.  You can go to:

     http://www.ureader.com/message/89324.aspx

and get a script to reslove this.  You should execute the script just before you connect to the VPN, everytime.

Problem is most likely that the client machines are not set to use the local via VPN DNS server for DNS resolution.
View properties for the NIC on your client box.
Open the TCP properties and replace the DNS servers IP's with the IP of your DNS server.
Test.
